Astronauts involved in Propulsion Test
      #2520424 - 07/15/08 01:13 PM

For some time I've been trying to find which astronauts were involved in propulsion testing. I know that most are assigned to specific duties - life support, rendezvous, EVA, etc. I work at Stennis Space Center and my office is in the test stand where the Saturn booster was tested. I'm trying to get a road, building, test stand or something named after one of the earlier pioneers. I'm tired of things around here being named after politicians.

Our center director has indicated to me that he will push for having such a tribute done if I do the research. All I've been able to find so far - without confirmation - is that Deke Slayton and Gene Cernan were involved in propulsion systems and test.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I thought I remembered that Gordo Cooper also was involved in propulsion, and apparently he was -- but for the Redstone, while Slayton worked on the Atlas. Here's a link to Cooper's obituary in the Marshall Center newsletter; at the bottom of page 3 in the "Did You Know?" box it mentions this assignment (link goes to PDF file).

Thanks, Rick. I met Gordon Cooper here at Stennis Space Center not two weeks before he died. He was frail but lucid with a twinkle still in his eye. That was quite a day. Wally Shirra was here too.
