Film for total eclipse
      #2521826 - 07/16/08 06:28 AM

Hello all,

I'm going to Novosibirsk to see the total eclipse. Can anyone reccomend a good film for the eclipse? I plan to take a wide field sequence with my Nikon FM2n and 24mm lens. I guess I should use a slide film to capture the "sunset" colors as the corona won't show much detail at 24mm anyway.

Boris,

I'm not sure, but I'm thinking Velvia or Provia 100. I've never had the pleasure to shoot a total eclipse, good luck.

Velvia 50 is great for a solar eclipse.
Have them hand check all film it is not good for it go through the x-ray.

Thanks! I was thinking to get some Sensia for the trip (and croatian Efke for b&w ), but Velvia is a great idea to capture the vivid colors of the totality!

Txstars - I have a bag for films so the x-rays won't harm them (of course, they have to be hand checked). Actually I got it locally, sceond hand from a guy that said he forgot the bag on his trip and all the films survived fine. Still, I would not like to risk damaging my films!

Slow films like those we are talking about, 50 and 100 speed are generally safe, but I'm with you, take no chances with those precious images. Bag 'em!

All depends on the airport you are at I guess. I had a few disposeable cameras that I got in the Bahamas and when I asked them to hand check them they said either it goes through the X--ray or into the trash can which did I want. I reluctantly told them to put it through and they developed with no issues.
