What a Day for Martian Meteorites! new
      #2521419 - 07/15/08 10:38 PM

Sadly, though, not for me.

I was outbid in the last 5 seconds on 6 mg fragment of Shergotty, the rare and original Martian Shergottite after which an entire class of meteorites from Mars was named. This meteorite was witnessed to fall August 25, 1865 in Shergotty, Gaya, Bihar, India.

A few minutes later I also lost out in the last seconds on a rare 2 mg fragment from Nakhla, a Martian Nakhlite meteorite that fell in Abu Hommos, Alexandria, Egypt on June 28, 1911. This is the original signature meteorite after which all other Nakhlites were named.

Three wasn't a charm, either. Shortly thereafter I was too late putting in my bid on a 4 mg specimen of NWA 2737 (Martian Chassignite). This is another one of the three types of Martian meteorites. If I'd have won all three of these, they would have represented (epitomized, really) in my collection the three types of Martian meteorites (Shergottite, Nakhlite, and Chassignite.)

Since there were other meteorite auctions ending on EBay today, I did get a 0.222 g piece of Mercury for my collection (well, so it's said -- NWA 2999.)

Now I have to walk outside and grab an Earth rock so I'll have rocks from 3 planets.

Wow...sorry to hear you didn't get the pieces you wanted. Although I know very little (Ok, nothing at all really) about meteorites, they sound like they would have been the envy of most collectors. Better luck next time sir.

Clear Skies...and happy meteorite hunting!

Sorry to hear that Gary.

I participated in that auction by a very reputable E-Bay member.I didn't even bother to go after the Lunar or Martian pieces,in his auctions,As I seem to have the same results you do.I have managed to get 1 Martian piece from his last 3 auctions.

Congratulations on winning the angrite. That is a great piece in its own right.

But I will admit that when I saw the piece of Shergotty from India I was excited. But if I read correctly he said he obtained a couple or few pieces of original Shergotty. So ther may be another piece available in a future auction.

But you have to admit he has some outstanding pieces in his auction.I could only imagine what his personal collection must look like.
