Meade DSI-C As Planetary Imaging Camera?
      #2522717 - 07/16/08 03:55 PM

Hi all,

I have a Meade DSI-C camera and am wondering how well it performs as a planetary camera. I plan on using my 6" SCT as the telescope and will probably use a 2x barlow as well.

I have a MacBook and will most likely use Nebulosity for capture, but if anyone has any other suggestions I'm open to that. I can run the MacBook in Windows XP mode if I want to run a Windows program...looking for suggestions there as well.

Thanks in advance!

Patrick

I have a DSI Pro. I've only used it on my HP laptop, but I did download Nebulosity to try running it on my Macs. Just haven't tried it yet.

I did experiment with it on Jupiter a few years ago. The biggest problem I see with it (and presumably with the DSIc as well), is that it's an interlaced video ccd. So, the interlaced lines are downloaded just after the first set, but they're combined into a single image. If there's any seeing motion at all (and there always is at those image scales), the planet will be sliced up like looking through venetian blinds, with the alternate images not lining up.

As far as I can recall, the Autostar software doesn't have a de-interlace capability. If it did, it would have to do it after each image is taken and before any are stacked (one of the niftiest features about the software, is the stacking while shooting a sequence), or you'd wind up with a blurred result.

My experiences aren't recent, though. And maybe the software has been upgraded to take this into account? (better would have been to use a progressive-scan ccd in the first place).

I have DSI-pro. I photographed planets with its(her) help. The result is unsatisfactory. Planets turn out "striped". I recommend camera DMK21AF04. AS.

I've always found the image from the DSI to be a bit soft for planetary imaging, but its high sensitivity and 16 bit color depth could be interesting. This is a loink to a page on using the DSI Pro for high resolution imaging..

Also, the DSI III's are not interlaced so they should work very well.

John:

That link is very helpful. I have Photoshop, and it does indeed have a de-interlace function, under "video" in the "filter" pull-down menu.

The DSI-IIIs are very interesting, though pricey compared to the DSI-Pros. It might be fun to try one of these with an Outback TEC mod. (primarily for DSOs).

Thanks everyone...sounds like the Meade DSI-C will be used for autoguiding, not imaging.

Wellll, don't let our opinions stop you from trying...

Below is a quickie little 3x1 mosaic of the moon taken with a Meade DSI at the prime focus of an LXD75 N6.
