Tak Toa 150 on a AP mach1?
      #2525980 - 07/18/08 07:07 AM

Hey lads o/

Long time lurker and want to say i love the site!! Has provided so much info to me in the past that i really wouldn't enjoy astronomy as much without it.

My question now is i have a mach1 gto with a eagle mount. I kind of bought with my heart rather then my head a Tak Toa 150. Its coming soon cant wait.

So now the reality. How do you all think this the mount will fair up to holding this OTA???

Im mostly visual but would like to get into imaging eventually.

Hope someone can help!!

Cheers to all

Paddy

The mach1 will be ok for visual but is a bit light for AP with the Tak TOA 150 after you get the camera / guider and guide scope all on board.
If you use a CCD camera that has a built in guider then you should be ok for many objects where you can rotate the camera to find a guide star. But the framing may not be to your liking.
You can always try to find someone that is looking to downsize their mount and work out a swap, or you can downsize to a smaller scope.

The TOA is a tank at 42 lbs. The Mach1 is rated at 45. Maybe you should look at a TEC160. More aperture and only 26 lbs.
Or a 900 mount.

Wow. What makes the TOA weigh so much?

It has double ED elements and built like a tank. But the weight really comes from a huge counterweight collar installed (if the user likes) on the rear of the tube. This is to offset the large lens cell if you want the rings centered on the OTA. The counterweight is over 10 pounds (IIRC). I often leave mine off without problems on the Mach 1. Add a Diagonal, Ethos EP, or camera and you don't have to move the balance point too far to the front of the OTA.

While the Mach 1 is rated at 45 pounds that has to be very conservative. It too is built like a tank. Paddy, I think you will be just as tickled as I am with that system. Probably one of the best tracking and color corrected systems out there. I'll try and find a link to verify this but I recall Roland C. talking about certain scopes not have the color correction of a TOA or AP refractor. That's a real endorsement for the TOA.

Thanks Everyone!!!

From the reviews I've read on the Tak, it puts it at about 32-33 pounds. Add the counter weight makes it 42-43 and then you need to add the holder....

This is why i was thinking it might be pushing. I've actually never used or seen a Toa 150 (used it baby bro the Toa 130 once and taught it was amazing). I was on Astromart looking for a Toa 130 and the Toa 150 came up for sale . So i took it lol.

If i can do without the counter weight and substitute that for the diagonal/eyepeice/powermate or camera/reducer and i would be under the 45lb rating....

Wohooooo. Hopefully, hopefully.

If you can find that link Jerry i'd love to read anything Roland has to say about the Tak.

Thank's again lads, im feeling better reading this

Any other experience you want to share on this setup jerry would be appreciated...

Paddy, I responded in a PM on some mounting thoughts.

Also, in in this page is a lot of very good information.

On the link, I can't find a direct link but do have his comments in my database. (I copy a lot of his instructional post on AM into the database. The man is an optical Einstein.) I can't quote directly since permission is required by the TOS to post another's work but it went something like this:

Quote:

If you want to image more of the spectrum to include that covered by a modern astronomical CCD camera, you probably want to go with an airspaced design as exemplified by TMB-Lzos, Tak TOA and AP EDF triplets ...........

In the same piece he also put the oil spaced designs by TEC and Zeiss in the same league.

Hey again.

Thanks for all the responces. One last thing. I need to attach the Toa 150 to the Mach1 through the Tak Double ring holder. I've been shopping around for dovetails and best to use seem to be BT's Tak-02dp and their universal saddle.

However both these together weight nearly 7LBS!!!. Surely there has to be a lighter way. Anyone know any?

Paddy --

I don't think there's a commercial alternative. I made a custom adapter to attach my Tak Mewlon clamp to my AP600 (I was also pushing the weight limit a bit). There's a thread here: Mounting a Mewlon 250 on an AP600E GTO.

Summary: I got it down under a pound, but it was a lot of effort.

Cheers,
-- Jeff.

Had a look at your thread there Jeff. That is top work, congrats. I dont suppose you'd be interesetd in doing a custom tak to AP mach1 plate for a fellow Irish man

To be honest, with a 33lb scope + 6.5lb dovetail + rings?? and not use the counter weight it would put me about 42ish.

The mount is rated for 45lb but is under-rated. It should still be alright. I wont be adding anything too heavy extra.

Thanks a lot lads!!!
