I recently dismantled my large aquarium (about 45-gal), & was waiting for help to haul it out. Today I thought, why not turn it into a display case for my meteorites? I'm going to get a velvet-type material, have different tiers, using boxes, etc. under the material. I will have a light mounted on the top to illuminate it.
This will utilize this space by recycling the aquarium!

Outstanding idea for a holder,Carol. The plans you have for this sound outstanding.I look forward to some pics when all of this is done.
Thanks for sharing this idea,I am sure there are others that have aquariums,or may buy one to use for a display like you have planned on. Thanks Again.

BTW, you may think some thin section prices are high. When you consider the amount of wasted materiel in the grinding process, and the time it takes to make one, the cost is not that high. Plus, some of these meteorites are darned expensive by the gram just for slices or fragments!
Yes, you may find cheaper thin sections, but the quality is noticably different. Believe me, I have bought a few cheap thin sections and they are junk!
As a lifelong mineral collector and as a new collector of petrographic thin-sections, the prices seem fair for the material and labor involved. Thanks for the link!

Here is one of my recent acquisitions. I got it at our local gem and mineral club's show last weekend. It's an unclassified NWA stone weighing in at 4425 grams. The top side is nicely covered in regmaglypts. The left and right sides are more smooth. The back surface, not visible, is the odd one as it's very planar but has the same semi-polished texture as the rest of the stone. I'm trying to decide if it was a fracture plane during flight, broke and weathered on earth, or was preferentially exposed and wind-blased to a flat surface. The stand (welded by the vendor) was included with the sale.
I've toyed with the idea of sending in a piece to get it classified but ultimately can't bring myself to cut the stone. And since I have no interest in selling pieces, don't need the extra "sellability" that classification might bring. So for now I have a nice center-case stone to sit next to my Campo iron.
Clear skies.

Wow that is a real beauty!
Nice crust and character. Big UNWA stones like that are going up in price. Nice score.
Here is a photo of something that just arrived yesterday. It's the biggest specimen I have acquired yet. It's a 17+ pound Campo Del Cielo with a few nice teardrop-shaped ablation markings.

Nice iron! I saw an oriented Campo last weekend, probably 5-7 lb range with nice striations running back from a blunted conical peak. Beautiful but $1500 was a little higher than I could do as I have this funny habit about paying rent from time to time... I could probably look up the dealer if you were interested in it.

That is a nice specimen. I bought a Campo a few months ago on eBay (bottom right in photo), but it's only about 1300 grams. It has a nice shape, though, and the price I thought was reasonable. In fact, specimens of Campo seem to be the most abundant and aggressively priced irons on the market today. There are some really good deals available on eBay these days.

Wow Ed, that's a very nice display scheme you have!
What are the slices and the specimen in the membrane box?
Care to give us a guided tour of what's in the photo?
Thanks!

Glad to. What I was trying to do was put together a small display that included each type of meteorite (stone, stony-iron, and iron)in the assorted forms they come in (whole specimens, slices, and thin slides)and then mix up they way they were presented.
Top, left to right: Brahin (pallasite) slice; etched Canyon Diablo iron, and Salaices (H4) polished slice.
Bottom: Pena Blanca (Aubrite) thin slide; Tatahouine (diogenite)whole stone; and Campo whole specimen.
Of course, so much is left out that the display doesn't really mean much. But it does look nice.

Very nice sampling there. Is the Brahin thin enough to be translucent when lit from behind? I'd love to own a nice-sized slice of pallasite, but it's outside my budget at the moment.
Tatahouine is one of my favorites. I bet your whole stone is very pretty. I have a few fragments that are jade green with striking black clasts. It's a shame we don't see giant chunks of it like other types.
I really like those caliper display stands you have.
Thanks for sharing this part of your collection......of course, now we are curious what you have stashed away that isn't in the photo!
Regards and clear skies,
MikeG
