Mert,
From the discussion, It seems many people modify or upgrade their mounts by simply adding grease! I realize there are tricks for getting the most out of the mount, and I do appreciate everyones input.
As any consumer, I expect a level of quality that is at least "standard". When I compare my Celestron slewing, the Atlas sounds like a lot of loose gears jumping all around in the gear box.
Since my Atlas is brand new, I don't want to try any modifications until after I have spoken to Orion. I am still waiting for a response from Orion. I will update this thread after I get the word back.

Hi DD,
I think you're right and I'm sure Orion will take
care of it.
They seem to have an excellent standard for service
according to a lot of threads here on CN I've seen!
As a matter of fact, my own EQ6 runs smooth, no
grinding noises whatever.
Likely it's only a matter of adjustments, but again
I'm sure Orion will take care of it!
Oh before I forget here you have a pic of the RA-assy
now with the transfer gear running of of a bearing, that's
why you see the 2 o-rings, don't need them any more
Let us know

UPDATE From Orion:
Quote:
Hello Doug – I did receive your sound files, and we agree it doesn’t sound like it should. Therefore, we are sending another Atlas EQ-G head to you. We are also enclosing return shipping labels so it won’t cost you anything to return the apparently defective head which you received. You can use the same packaging to return your noisy head including a small note with your contact information so that proper credit can be issued for the returned head. There will be no charge to you unless your defective mount head is not returned in 30 days. Your new order number is # and it will ship Tuesday. I apologize for the delay, but we had to close yesterday due to the big mountain fire a few miles away. The ashes were falling like snow here.
Have a very pleasant Memorial Day weekend.

Mert,
Thanks for the photos. I will probably try modifying after my warranty expires. It really helps seeing other people's photos of modifications.

That grinding sound is NOT normal and Orion took care of it. Their reputation is outstanding and so is the mount. The mount and goto are very straight forward so enjoy those California skies.

Mert,
Did that transfer gear originally have a bearing in it ? Looks like a 625. Hard to tell though, as I'm sure the pics not to scale..
So your saying to slightly tighten the mounting screw clearance, increasing the pressure on the o-rings, which takes out the "wobble" correct ???

Hi BCB,
Basically yes, that's what I did and it made it run much better. On the bearing itself, the original gear has no bearing, just a too big hole and the screw through it + 2 o-rings. Mine had radial play and wobble, so once taken out that ( loosen the grub screw and fasten the axis a bit ) it worked quit a lot better. The bearing I used is SKF, W628/5-2ZR

AHHH.. A 628.. I was close
Is there still a bit of "wobble" with the bearing, but without the o-rings ? I would suspect so, unless you used tight race tolerance bearings.
Nicely done.

After spending over a half hour on the blower with Tim at TSS, I feel a lot more confident of what is going on inside these mounts. I personally know that I would not be too worried about the amount of noise that is coming from my mount but I am glad you are being taken care of by Orion as they do well serve their customers; course no one's perfect too.
And I WILL be sending mine in to TSS for a mod to the Main bolt for Azimuth polar adjustments (adjusts more like my Sphinx) and also to have his ceramic bearings installed in about 30 days. I like what I hear and am tickled that this mount is performing so incredibly well or at least as well compared to anything else I have owned to date.

Hi Mark,
Yes, quit close!!! If there is still some "wobble" then it is very little, likely to do with the race-way play of the balls. To me it seems as if it runs with a constant "noise" when slewing and the feeling to my hand is that it is very sturdy now. In the last pic, you can see the 2 washers I made with the same thickness as the o-rings. This way I could still use the original axis. Be aware that this axis is kept into place by the threading and a grub-screw, there is no centering collar used, maybe next time I'll make a decent axis.
My advise for those who like to tweak their mount a bit, do it step by step and always measure PE before and after. Even the slightest adjustment can make a big difference!

I just got my Atlas EQ-G yesterday. Sadly, my mount makes even more noise that yours - it sounds just like a coffee grinder. The declination axis makes the most grinding noise. My RA axis compares to your soundfile - just a tad better.
I am following your lead on this one. Hoping Orion will help me out. I don't want to tinker - especially after spending this much money. I just sent Orion tech support my WMA sound file. Hopefully it doesn't get spam filtered out. Will let you guys know how my issue turns out - I'm hopeful after reading this thread.
Thanks,
Khang

Hi Khang,
How did it work out for you with Orion? I tried calling them about the sounds that my new Sirius mount was making (click and grind at start/end of DEC slew), but the phone tech's only suggestion was "use the 30 day return period if you don't like the noise." I then suggested that I could email them a recording, and he said that was a good idea. I'm hoping I get a better response to the email. I've attached an mp3 of the sound *mine* makes.

Bobby,
Your's doesn't just have a grinding noise but a swoosh or a snap almost like sound. Mine just grinds as it starts up and ends the slew then its quiet during the slew.
I got nowhere with Orion - I told the first tech guy that I had sent an wma in the email. He calls back and says its normal. I call back and talk to tech guy #2, he says my email is still in cue and hasn't been looked at yet...things that make you go hmmm...then I get an official email that basically tells me this is totally normal with all new EQG/EQ6 mounts.
The Yahoo Tech Group for EQ6 said that its probably ok. That's after I was called a schmuck or mark, something like that. Some told me to just deal with it. Wonder if Orion has people planting messages...things that make you go hmmm... Mine tracks ok i guess - for now. Unguided, no PEC is about 30 arc second PE. I guess that's better than LX200 guaranteed 1 minute PE?
The attached picture is m57 directly overhead almost at zenith. The pic was a 6minute pic with a 4.5inch reflector, and a 11 pound counterweight. You can see the small kink in the star trail.

bobby,
Join the EQ6 yahoo group. I've posted my sound file there - its over 1.6megs.
Also, check out this guy's site regarding his pain and solution. His problem was far worse though.
