Mount for Garrett 70mm RA binoculars new
      #2528252 - 07/19/08 12:05 PM

I'm looking for some mount advice. I just got the Garrett right angle 70mm binoculars (same as the Orion BT-70). I have the Orion paragon plus tripod but I found that the binos won't stay put when they're pointed at the sky -- they're too back heavy so the eyepieces drift down towards the ground.

So I've been mulling 3 different possibilities and I'd like your input. I have a Desert Sky Mount. I think I could get a heavy duty L-bracket to attach to the binos and then attach the bracket to a dovetail to use on that mount. One problem with this -- the binos will be quite close to the top of the tripod and I'll constantly be stepping around tripod legs. There's also no way to change the height of the binos without adjusting the tripod legs.

Second possibility: Universal Astronomics T-Mount light. This looks like it would get the binoculars away from the tripod and adjusting the height looks like it would be very easy. I'm assuming that it's designed to be easy to balance. But I'm wondering if it will be a hassle to set up.

Third option: The oberwerk fork mount, assuming these binos will fit. This mount will not solve the height issue and I'll still be stepping around the tripod legs.

So your thoughts? Any better (not too expensive) options?

Thanks

Is a pier mount a suitable prospect for your bino's- then pick an appropriate head? No legs sticking out, that way- Otherwise, I would think a P-mount such as the Uinversal Astronomics would be the best. I believe Joe Ogiba uses a setup like that for his RA-88's and seems to like it- ans he recently posted pictures of it here in one of the threads.
