Online Printing of Astrophotos new
      #2519759 - 07/15/08 06:27 AM

Has anyone tried any of the online photo printing services like Shutterfly for their astrophotos? I imagine if they were sent in high enough resolution and requested to have no color correction, levels changed, etc they may actually come out alright. I have searched the web for information on this and it looks like this subject has been rarely discussed. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I use Cafe Press - a service that let me put my photos on posters, coffee mugs, T-shirts and more. They have tools to help you create a web page too.

The prints come out great! Ask anyone who has one of my Cosmic Scale posters.

Thanks CF. I checked them out. I like the storefront option. Very cool.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but have you checked out the Kodak Gallery (Link)? The Gallery does both film processing and printing of your uploaded digital images. They process your 35mm film and upload digital images online for you and return your negatives. After your images have been uploaded, you can order prints from them online. Pricing is very reasonable and Kodak pays postage both ways (order free mailers from them on the web site). Estimated turnaround is 2-7 days. The only drawback is that they don't process slides. You can also upload your own digital images and order prints from them.

A friend of mine in San Francisco uses Kodak for both film processing and printing photos from his digital camera. He's tried several of the other online printing services and according to him, Kodak is the best. I just shot a test roll of Kodak Gold 200 to check out my OM-1n and I'm going to process the film with them. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thank you for the reply. I'm not interested in the film processing or having them scanned, just printing services for uploaded images. I was wondering if anyone had ordered prints from one of these services and how well they turned out, specifically astrophotos.

We are all used to having our photos "on screen", but I wanted to have some large prints made from digital files. I was curious how well astrophotos made it through. I would be interested in your experience once you get yours back.

Thanks

If you have a Mac, you can also use iPhoto's "Order Prints" option. This works very well, and they even can make posters and books.

some advice is to make sure when you upload, double check you are not uploading smaller versions of the picture. what i mean is some of the uploaders will try to make the file smaller - maybe optimized for a 4x6 or 5x7 print. you may need to check something to upload the original file size.

Jeff,

Thanks, Yes I have thought of that. All my images will be printed at 300 DPI! (i.e an 8x10 will be 2400x3000 dpi) That ought to cover it. It's easy to get large image files from my 6x7 transparencies, but files can get really big. I can't wait to see my Milky Way shots in 20x30 prints.

I received my first order from Shutterfly. I had several 5x7's, 8x10's, and a single 11x14 made to sample the quality. I am generally pleased. The contrast of the prints are higher than what was seen on my monitor. This is where critical calibration of the monitor comes in.

The 11x14 is incredible. Suitable for framing. They were all scanned images from my original 6x7 transparencies. All were printed at 300 DPI. The 8x10 and the 11x14 look like something out of coffee table book, very sharp, even at close inspection.
