two nice doubles in Cygnus
      #2529401 - 07/20/08 01:26 AM

Tonight with my 16x70, after viewing the most beautiful Alberio, I looked 6.5 degrees NE to 17 Cyg. This is a double star, separated by 26 arcsec, but with the very different brightnesses of 5.0 and 9.2 magnitude. Not hard though.

1 degree south of 17 is a bit of a mystery: a very similar double, but not shown double on Star Atlas 2000.0. This one is a little wider however, and I actually "discovered it" (go ahead somebody, tell me the Struves beat me) in a 10x50 and at first thought it must be 17, but later figured out it wasn't.

These two make a nice pair in the sharp part of the field of the 16x70. The sight is reminiscent of the "other double double in Lyra" that CESDewar recently told us about, but, the two having very different PAs, is not as delightfully confusing to look at. Hey, they're easier.

I don't know if 17 Cyg can be seen with a 10x50. I didn't notice it the night I wandered upon the unknown star to the immediate south. I bet it would be kind of tough and will try it next time I get a chance.

Data from SkyCat 2000, Vol. 2: 19h 46.6m +32d 53m S 726 mags 6.2, 9.2; sep. 30.7"; PA 197; date of measure, 1933. This is actually the AD components of Ho 114 (B and C way beyond bino viewing. Most telescopes as well). Good "heads-up" observation, though. These "discoveries" while observing another object are fun in the finding and research, aren't they?

VanJan,
A moment of appreciation for H. A. Howe, and all the double star discoverers who came after the Struves, who left few stones unturned. Now I'm wondering if SA2000.0 only plots Struve doubles, or why this star didn't get marked. It's interesting to go deeper than "the view".

Thank you for digging out the facts on this star.
Ron

SA2000 has a complete explanation of the criteria used to include doubles in its charts. I'm not certian right now, but I'm pretty sure the secondary needs to be brighter than mag 9?

Rules for marking as double on SA2000.0:
0.5 to 30 arcsec, provided companion is about 10.5m or brighter.
30 to 200 arc, provide both components are 8.5m or brighter.
So, 17 Cyg marked double, and Ho 114 not, is correct.
