Sunrise Over Clavius 12 july 1927hrs
      #2529588 - 07/20/08 06:19 AM Attachment (61 downloads)

Hi all,
I forgot about this one, it shows sunrise over the old crater Clavius. Its interior is mainly filled with shadow though the ramparts of the craters lying on Clavius floor are catching the early morning light and are seen well. Of note is the complex walls of Clavius, the early morning light shows a wealth of detail that enables one to appreciate just how complex the ramparts of the walls of this wonderful crater plain are. Thanks for looking and keep well. Larry

Larry,

Wonderful image, Clavius is just suspended in darkness like a wafer at the terminator---stunning.

Frank

Thank you for the kind comments. The view through the eyepiece was wonderful, at least the image gives a reminder of the day. Keep well Frank. Larry

Clavius is my favorite lunar site/sight.
I don't think I've ever caught it at that illumination angle though. It's as though the moon stops at the edge of Clavius.

I like the shadow in Tycho as well... cutting across the center and the central peak breaching the shadow, casting its own long shadow across the rest of the plain.

Hello David,
I know what you mean as regarding the angle of illumination. I cannot recollect seeing Clavius like this before. I suppose it is one of the benefits of moving to New Zealand from the UK. As we are 12hrs ahead, I now see the moon when it would be daytime in England. As such I have the joy of seeing the moon in a whole new light as it were. Keep well. Larry

Hello John,
Thank you for the kind comments. The image brings back the memory of the evening quite vividly. The view through the eyepiece was something to behold. CCD images are very good at capturing the moment as it were, but the subtle shadow effects are sometimes either lost or not so evident in a captured image. Anyway, keep well. Larry
