Jupiter 7-15-08 still learning
      #2529615 - 07/20/08 07:16 AM

i think either my focus was a bit off, or this is just a challenge to do in light polluted ohio, looking through a lot of air, since it is so low in the sky, but heres what i managed to get out of what i thought was a good night....mag 5 around 2am ( mag 5 is rare where i live)
dont mind the green lines, its something registack did...????
suggestions welcome

I think it looks good, how many frames did you capture and what was the frame rate? Assuming you used the web cam.

i used my point and shoot, avi about 900 frames

i am considering selling my webcam, with out buying a new laptop, its useless, and i have gotten better results with my camera doing afocal to be honest, and im considering a better DSLR camera to use for the family , and double as a AP camera
im almsot ready to sell the SPC900NC on e bay with all the goodies, i've pretty much had it trying to get results with it, cant figure out what all the hype is about it, i think its awfull!

I've had pretty good results with mine, no complaints so far...You shouldn't have any problem selling it. Did you use your Steadypix on this image? Not bad for an afocal.

ya i used the steadypix and my point and shoot, so if i am getting these results this way, it leads me to believe i have the concept grasped more then the webcam method, therefore, may be go off to the afocal of a better camera, or the one where i put the camera in the eyepiece and or use the cameras zoom and features.....forgot the term ....but im sure you follow

Webcams do work. This is an image shot through my 103mm (4.5 inch)refractor using a Philips PCVC 740K TouCam on 7/10/08. Your image looks like it might have been affected by atmospheric turbulence or maybe heat waves coming off a hot roof. Florida is famous for unstable air and sometimes my images look similar to yours. It is best to capture planetary images when the object is close to the zenith. When you image close to the horizon you will get blue or green edges on Jupiter's limb. Light pollution is probably not your problem. The sky around my house is very light polluted.

using a 30' extension on a webcam will cause ALOT of image compression. you'd be better off without using it.

I second that! If at all possible get a laptop so you don't have the long extension.

Also..after you stack with registax...try going into the wavelets section and increasing the sliders (i typically leave the top one (1) alone and the rest are adjusted.

ill keep at it then and start saving for a dedicated laptop
the one i have is so old, i'd have to buy a new hard drive for it, its 2g and xp takes up most of that.....ill consider upgrading the laptop first, then weigh my options
thanks for all your help

Im thinking of getting the steadypix universal mount for my digicam (its an Olympus C7070). Would it work well with that cam and 40mm or 32mm EPs? My cam has a front filter thread of 40.5mm How long an exposure can I take with this setup? I have a Nexstar 8SE. Im looking for exposures of up to about 15sec so I can image the moon, planets and some dso (M13, M42, M31) as well. Is the vignetting minimal and can I use barlows and filters with this setup? The EPs I will be using with this are the Orion Highlight Plossl (40mm) and the Sirius Plossl (32mm). Thanks!

i would assume it would depend on your mount's tracking ability, and if your camera can be set for that esposure time
as long as your camera has a 1/4"-20 thread on the bottom, it will mount up to it, via either a 2" or 1.25" eyepiece

Thanks! My camera has a great manual mode. Do you use any other accessories, or just camera+steadypix+telescope? I have the tripod adapter at the bottom of my cam. No risk of the camera falling off? My cam's zoom range is 27mm-110mm, so hopefully this set up will work fine. Whats the longest steady exposure been and what EPs have you used with it? Also, have you done any dso's? How bad is the vignetting at wide angle? Thanks!

havent tried any dso's yet, mostly concentrated on closer objects like planets and the moon for the learning curve to kick in....
im also learning how to use my eq platform, that has been a steep learning curve, and i ended up modifying it a lot to get it to do what i wanted it to do,
i dont use auto-guiding or a goto system, so the challenge has been to find the objects in the middle of the light polluted city

as far as the camera goes, you may want to consider the prime focus method, where you screw an adapter on the camera itself, then use it inplace of the eyepiece, or basicaly , slide directly into your focuser and use the camera as the eyepiece....its cheaper, and i think the results are better
look up these 2 methods of astrophotography:
afocal
prime focus

so close to zenith, meaning its low in the horizion, and im looking through a lot of air, and be patient for it to rise higher "up"
k got it
webcam issues....be more patient with it, dont blow another grand on a DSLR and get a laptop or upgrade the dinasuar i currently have and dedicate it to astrophotography.......k i got that too...
be patient and wait for nights of great viewing of objects close to zenith...
take on the DSO once you better learn the nights sky, and study the maps more, because you cant afford the ATLAS you realy want, plus the tracking OTA and the additional autoguider camera to track them....and plug it into your atlas, refer to cant afford that..yet.....lol
pospone the iphone for work coz AP is more important.....lol
and if you do decide to sell the SPC900NC, wait a bit longer untill your totaly frustrated after like a year or more ( coz they will be worth more, if you havent had any sucess at that time) then sell it for the iphone, and make a profit?
im getting this right............right?
lol
thanks all, im jsut frustrated.....i took up this hobby to learn patients.......im getting it now....thanks!!

Can you do prime focus with a point and shoot with manual controls? Also, how did you convert the images into avi format and combine individual frames into 900? Thanks!
