SPC900NC used with Vista
      #2529626 - 07/20/08 07:30 AM

I just purchased a Phillips SPC900NC Web Cam. I wanted to use it with my newer laptop which has 2GB memory and uses the Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. Per the instructions with the web cam it does not say it will run on Vista. My older laptop uses Windows XP however my older laptop does not have as much memory (512MB) as my newer HP laptop. Is there some other software I can or should use with the Phillips SPC900NC web cam to make it workable with Vista so I can use my newer laptop? I wanted to try to do some astro imaging..... I already have the 1.25" camera eyepiece adapter.

Thanks for your time! Don

You don't need a lot of RAM to run the SPC900, a fast hard drive is more important (to stop dropped frames). My old Dell with 512mb ram had no problems at all Vista uses a ton of memory just sitting around doing nothing at all. You'll probably be using more RAM running the cam under Vista then under XP!

Also, you'll probably do better using another capture program instead of V-Lounge that comes with the camera. I never could even get Vlounge to install on my Vista laptop. Try Astrocapture http://arnholm.org/astro/software/wxAstroCapture/

or K3CCDtools http://www.pk3.org/Astro/index.htm?k3ccdtools.htm

or maybe AMCap http://amcap.en.softonic.com/

There are others too. I like Astrocapture because it's simple. I use it in conjunction with WCTRL http://www.burri-web.org/bm98/soft/wcctrl/index.htm, but it will work by itself. Wctrl, just lets you have really good control over your camera settings and allows easy saving of them.
