Well I've just started imaging using a first gen DSI color camera. I'm using a really low budget setup and in that spirit I need to develop my processing suite. I've installed GIMP and IRIS and feel that going with no cost software is the way to go for me right now... Any other must have tools that you know about that are GNU or freeware? Thanks,

You might want to get Deep Sky Stacker.

Thanks for the suggestions Charlie. I've got a long way to go with learning how to use these applications. There's so much that they can do, Ive read where gimp will take PS paintbrushes. Pretty cool stuff!
Cheers,

Gimp is a good start although only 8 bits it has may Photosop functions...and also layer creation.
Iris has a great filter called adaptive filter for smoothing out noisy images. Also a gradient removal tool. The contrast adjustment in Iris is like a poor mans curves.gamma and light balance are also good for tweaking colors and contrast. Also saturation works well....I beleive Iris is 16 bit though.
You may want to look at nebulosity for 45.00 It captures stacks aligns filters debayers combines stretches. It drives my DSI canon Xt and SPC900 and also my SBIG ST-7 if need be.
keep asking ??

As of version 2.5, GIMP uses the GEGL (Generic Graphics Library) which is a graph based image processing framework.
It supports floating point handling and processing and output of larger 8bit, 16bit integer and 32bit floating point per component buffers larger than RAM.
The version 5 releases are not really stable, but GIMP is near version 2.6 and, when it arrives, should be much more capable.
