Software question
      #2530339 - 07/20/08 03:51 PM

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for a program that will change my monitors normal color scheme to a night vision adapted red color scheme. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I had the same issue with my laptop and could find no program. One guy in my club suggested calling around to art supply stores in search of Ruby or Amber Lith. It's a plastic film that you buy by the sheet for a couple bucks. I got one of each and cut them to fit my laptop screen. In my opinion, the Ruby Lith was too dark so I use the Amber Lith instead but either will work. Just a suggestion in case you don't find the software to do it.

The software that you seek is available (I don't have a link) but it does not do a complete job, as there is still some white light in the screen. The rubylith is the best alternative.

Just tried DarkAdapted. Text that was black on white changed to reddish-black on white. Since the white was the problem, this wasn't good. Maybe one simply needs to modify the Windows theme to change that?

I remember once downloading something that changed the screen theme to green text on black background in place of black text on white. Maybe combining that with DarkAdapted would do the job.

p.s. On Palms, rather than laptops, one can use Khroma to create a night theme with red text and black background. Not all apps will respect it, but a lot will. One can then use my NightMode desk accessory (available in the 1src.com freeware section) to toggle themes.

Depending on your personal requirements, you may be able to find a software color scheme that works.

If you are going to go to a star party, the bottom line is that a laptop's backlight - even with a completely black screen is *far* too bright. You absolutely need to cover it with something for an event like that.

I've heard good things about rubylith, but I personally use 1/8" thick transparent red plastic, like you can get from Tap Plastics. I find that, at my laptop's brightest physical setting, it is easily readable without being objectionably bright. Then, when I've got an imaging run going and don't need to be looking at the screen, I can set the screen to its dimmest physical setting. This darkens the screen to a soft red that's not even noticable more than about 15 or 20 feet away, even if you are looking for it.

Thanks,
-Wade

Changing your color scheme to as much black as possible and putting a couple layers of Rubylith over your screen will do the trick. Rubylith is used in the screen printing business and is a red transparency film. I was told you can find it at art stores, but I was unsuccessful at both Michael's and Aaron Brothers Frame & Art. I'm going to try a screen printing supply store next.

I second the use of 1/8" thick transparent red acrylic sheets
I get my from Sloan's Woodshop they also have 1/16" Thick Transparent Acrylic sheets.

In addition to dimming and using a red theme, I'd like to try out a privacy filter to block off-axis light spill.
