color filters for jupiter
      #2530442 - 07/20/08 04:53 PM

i have recently been observing jupiter with a 4" "mak-cas" and since jupiter does sit low toward horizon(i am at 40 dg. n.)what filter would best negate at least some amospheric distortion and what would best enhance contrast on planet surface?? i used a yellow filter yesterday and seems to help some(wishful thinking!??ha!)thanks jim

I like using the yellow-green #11 to se the festoons better, the lt.green #58 also works to see the bands better, a 82a pale blue is also nice to see the bands darker.

Nothing will negate the atmospheric distortions, but you can certainly enhance the contrast of the bands with a #82A. A #80A would be even better, but it's a lot darker than the #82A and I'm not sure if it would make things too dark given your 4" aperture.

I've used both the 80A and the #11 yellow-green in a 4" Mak. Each will work fine.

A vote for the 82A. I will have to try the #11 yellow-green.

Althought it isn't a "color filter", the Baader Moon & Skyglow filter does a very nice job on Jupiter.

A variable polarizer helps with Jupiter (and Saturn too) by reducing the amount of glare. Dial it in to where the image is not so bright, and things like bands, the GRS "well" will stand out better.

I like to use a section of my VPF. It just darkens the image ever so slightly, but it seems to enhance the viewing.

Cheers!

I generally dislike filters for observing, but the Baader Moon & Skyglow filter does make seem to improve the contrast on Jupiter.

80A filter works for me. I also have a Baader Moon+Skyglow filter. I think for the money you will be happy with the 80A, I also use it for viewing the Moon . I like it a lot. Hope this helps

I have even used the moon filter out of curiosity and it worked as well. My avatar is a photo I took of Jupiter with my 4SE that was enhanced slightly!
