A few months ago it was announced that due to funding cuts to the science budget, Jodrell Bank, the famous radio observatory in Cheshire would be closed down. Today, after a public outcry, it was announced in The Times that it has been saved.
Great news!

That is great news Cygnus. How the faceless people in greysuits could even consider closing it, I will never know.

Doubtful. More likely a delay in the next (Jupiter/Saturn/Moon/Mars-pick your favorite) mission.

Jodrell and Arecibo have been around for a long time. I have no idea concerning the changes in technology over the years that may dictate the need to shutdown these two projects.
Could be that advance technology has removed the need for these projects and the funds made available by the closing of these stations may have a better purpose in space exploration.
Outcries against the closing of a project may relate more to local economics/politics, and even worse, sentimentality.
So, they saved Jodrell Bank. What was it we were looking for in the first place that maybe can't be found in a less expensive mode given the new technologies?
