nearby red + white dwarfs
      #2540023 - 07/25/08 03:23 AM

anyone looking at these Last night did red dwarfs eg Barnard's Star in Oph [highest proper motion] and Van Biesbreok's Star in Aql [lowest luminocity star @ Abs mag +19.3] and rare white dwarf binary G206-17/18 in Her. These were trawled from Burnham's Cel Hk.

I've been following the proper motion of Barnard's Star for many years.

One of the components of Keid or 40 Eridani (Omicron 2 Eridani), a notable triple star system, is a white dwarf that is among the easiest white dwarfs observable with amateur instruments. The primary star is a 4.4 magnitude yellow dwarf. The white dwarf, 40 Eridani B, shines at magnitude 9.5 and can be seen with a small aperture. Larger telescopes will resolve the third component, an 11.2 magnitude red dwarf.

Likewise too - I've started a Meade forum thread with my recent results but I've failed to identify the diffuse object [circled] on the frame which looks like a galaxy in DDS to me - if not I'll claim Nytecam 1

I recorded this system last year - nice one

No white dwarfs yet for me, I will try 40 Eridani later in the year. I DID however see Struve 2398 recently -- a pair of 8th mag red dwarfs 11 ly away. These are my first red dwarves.

No, but a member of my club did a tracking of the proper motion of another star with rapid proper motion, 61 Cygni (Bessel's star). It also happens to be a multiple star system to boot.

He's actually compiling a nice image collection of multiple star systems.

Thanks Starbux and Bill - here's my shot [from my CN Meade forum thread] of rare white dwarf duo G206-17/18 in Hercules and is worth a look. Not pretty but challenging and only one step removed from city-sized neutron star and then a blackhole singularity - I'll not be drawn into an observation of the latter

perhaps not - I've identified this as mag 15.6 galaxy PGC 61178 as here.
