red+white dwarfs via classic LX200
      #2540941 - 07/25/08 03:19 PM Attachment (37 downloads)

Last night imaged Barnard's [Run-away] star in Oph via 30cm LX200 + Starlight Xpress Lodestar CCD. This mag 9 star is one of the nearest to earth and thus has the most rapid proper motion >10"arc per annum almost due north - I've marked it position recorded by Lowell Ob in July 1960 - see Burnham's Celestial Handbooks

It's amazing to actually see motion in something like a star. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Dave - below is a rare double white dwarf star system in Hercules eg G206-17 and 18 at mag 16.2 and 17 some 55"arc apart but clearly recorded in 100s exposure. I used on-line Digital Sky Survey photos to identify the pair with a little help from Lowell Ob the discoverers. Due these stars relatively closeness to earth they 'move' noticeably against the star background and pop-into-view when a pair of images from different epochs is compared on PC screen

White dwarfs can be smaller than red dwarfs eg earth size objects containing the mass of the sun at extremely high temp and mind-boggling intense gravity eg a cubic inch of the stars weighs many tons

Great images! What do you use to find the white dwarfs?
I am interested in imaging red dwarfs and the software out there right now cannot filter by star class very well most of them are more geared to DSO's.

Thanks,

Jon

Hi Jon - I've used [as quoted earlier] 1970's Burnham's Celestial Handbook [3-vols] to check out red + white dwarf stars by constellation but its a bit dated. You can use the red/blue plates from the on-line Digital Sky Survey [via Google] to spot red and white dwarfs and also by their movement against the star background as all these stars are fairly near to earth. Found this WD list/charts Good luck

Thanks - Just found that Redshift 6 can display by star type & Mag. They have not released this version for some reason in the USA but I got a new copy coming from a vendor on ebay. Many of the White/Red dwarfs have not been measured for parallax, which is something I want to try.

Thanks again.

Jon
