It was one of those rare summer nights when the sky clears and the Milky Way looks like a gentle north-south cloud. I grabbed the SV102ED to look at the Lagoon to sketch a wider field of view than we had previously sketched; then using the same setup and camera settings I went to the Trifid. The two objects, which could be considered "neighbors" or sisters, have an incredible degree of contrast with respect to size, color, shape, and star field. My contempative note comes out of contrasting features that I thought about.
The Lagoon sketch is better called an "impression" of the object since the star field for the field of view was way beyond my ability to capture. I only selected key stars and apparent asterisms or groups to anchor my dark lane/bright ribbon study. With the large field of view, the star field around the Trifid is beautiful, but I confined my self to the object itself.
....a good night to give thanks.

Frank, thought about you when I was putting up last night. I was too pooped to take advantage of it but the waning moon was rising when I came in...beautiful golden crescent. Know you like those kind of views as I do.

Roland,
We were overcast most of the night here but I did see that crescent moon all morning after the clouds moved out. It looked glorious.

Great views of the lagoon and trifid,it clearly the extent of the nebula, around here in the chitown suburbs only a wee bit of nebula is visible around the star cluster in m-8, no real nebula is seen around the trifid in my 6" achro, thanks for the great view.

Thanks all. The views were truthfully beautiful. I will say, however, that my sketching technique tends to increase contrast a little bit because as I study, I tend to bear down on the pastel...and I make corrections by laying down more chalk rather than erasing. It might sound easy sketching from a monitor, but the two-eye view, the depth of detail that is rendered to the screen, and the amount of landscape in an object this big is a real challenge. It might be a lesser challenge for better sketchers but I seriously enjoy getting what I can. You will notice the M8 is done with a blue paper...thank goodness, because the black lanes through the object are like a maze. You can get lost when drawing it. So, blue permits me to lay down the black and better remember where I am. Infrequently I have a finger on the screen while applying pastels with my other hand in order to keep from getting lost.
Someday I would really like some of you to try this technique of sketching using the output to the astro video camera to see some of what happens. Who knows, some sketchers might quickly find easier ways to study and sketch than I have found.
