Impact object diameters from crater diameters?
      #2543419 - 07/26/08 10:58 PM

Everytime I look at a crater on the moon I wonder what size object it took to punch it out. Is there some rough estimate for the size of the object that created it from the size of the crater it made?

Gill,

The Meteor Crater folks (not too far from your Phoenix home?) are said to have among their displays a Create-a-Crater game related to impacts on Earth. It may well be the same as the web-based version, although I don't have the software necessary to run that.

For lunar craters, however, a better (and simpler) place to start would probably be the page created by planetary impact expert Jay Melosh. The second link there should let you view his best guesses as to the size and type of impactors required to produce specific craters of the Moon.

Super! A run through the calculation shows a 1km crater was created by a 20-meter asteroid in just 12.5 seconds. That's a crater 50 times the size of the rock. Just what I wanted to know, thanks Jim.
