I place the mask in protection filters. I screw in the masks when focusing my Borg 60ed and canon lens.

anat -

Thanks for sharing! Would love to see some images of the spikes on the camera lens with the mask on.

Oh sure, blew away a few subs because of that a few weeks ago. One of the reasons I monitor my imaging session with DeepSkyStacker Live. If my FWHM values and star counts are too low I know there's trouble.

Anyone had success making a mask for a piggyback camera? I made one for my Sony DSC-R1 that has a 24 to 120 (35mm equivalent) zoom lens, but I could not get the diffraction pattern.

I have had excellent success with the Bahtinov mask and use it exclusively for my focus requirements. There will come a time when I will want to employ automation software for unattended image capture. Since this would involve using focusing software without using a mask, I wonder if anyone has focused using FocusMax and compared the result to that achieved by the Bahtinov mask. Would be an interesting comparison.

Thanks.

Not FocusMax, but Craig Stark (PHD / Nebulosity author) posted an article in his blog recently where he compares the focus using the mask vs. Nebulosity's focus routine.

I had a local sign company make a Bahtinov mask out of acrylic for my 4" refractor. The homemade cardboard one I made worked well, so I can't wait to try this one out. Thanks to Pavel and those here at CN who helped bring us this great focusing tool!

I tried getting one for a C8 cut with a water jet machine. They wanted over $100 if I supplied the UPVC sheet (McMaster-Carr $20). I gave in and ordered one from www.focus-mask.com for $40+shipping. The foam-core one I made wasn't so resilient after all...

I had a laugh with the mask and M-45. I shot it with my Canon 40D ( I am on the list for a QHY8 ) See you soon.

Wow, I can't believe I read an entire 22-page thread, but this one has been great! Yesterday I used the wisdom gathered here to create a Bahtinov mask for my 4" Stellarvue using black cardstock and an embroider hoop. The results were stunning! Perfect visual focus in just a few seconds. Unfortunately it was cloudy last night here in Phoenix so I had only a few minutes to try it out. I'll try it out again tonight, this time with the camera. My big thanks to out to everyone who had a hand in putting this thread together!

This looks like just what I need for my C11/Hyperstar 3 setup. Its a wonderful system and works well with my DSLR, but it's difficult to focus. I'm assuming that since the C11 with the Hyperstar is effectively f/2, I should, for the calculation, use a F.L. of 560mm (2x280) rather than the native F.L. of 2800mm. Could anyone comment? Thanks.

No, you would still use the 2800mm fl.

Bill- You have asked the magic question that has puzzled many people about the Bahtinov mask.

If you want to focus using the first order then you need to optimize your cuts for f2 for the hyperstar. However the third order can be used to focus.

Here is a photo of a Mag 3 star with a C11 F10 taken with a DSLR camera. This mask is optimized for F4, but you see the third order still is very effective for focus.

Jerry - So then using the Mask Generator I would use 2800 for the F.L. and 50 for the Bahtinov factor (for 3rd order)?
