Let me sign off on this thread as well as stating that from what I have seen of the EON 120, it is no doubt the current price/performance champ and something we should see more of in this hobby. Jan, you are quite correct in your appraisal of the scope. Dave

The EON is probably the best deal in any refractor in the current mark. Sit down, George, I am about to agree with you that waiting five years or more to get a scope is just plain silly. The fact that you can go out, buy this scope in a case with rings etc for just a hair under 2K and get this level of performance is astonishing. Best bang for a buck in today's market and deserves all the praise you and the others have pointed out.

Over and out -- except clouds this weekend, so no observing, darn it! Dave

2000 bucks is about my limit on ANY telescope. FWIW, before I got my 120mm EON, I compared it with the older (now discontinued) 120mm ED Orion model. Not surprisingly, I can't say that there was any noticeable difference, except for the mechanicals. The EON's mechanicals are far superior as well as the elegance factor. Orion did a great job transferring their 120mm ED optics to a much nicer (as in higher quality) tube design. As far as the high power performance, Orion spec's the 120mm EON's maximum "useful" magnification at 240x. Case closed!

There's absolutely no doubt the EON 120ED is a great scope.
But some folks actually prefer the lighter tube and components of the older version.
A friend of mine went scope shopping at a local dealer and saw the EON 120 on display. He picked it up and noticed how substantial it was. It would overwhelm his "grab 'n' go" alt-az mounting. The dealer had one of the older ED120's left, at a bit of a discount. He bought it. Not because it was cheaper (which was nice ) but because he wouldn't need a mounting upgrade to use it.

Hi again,

I have owned and looked through a Skywatcher ED100. The optics were very good and well corrected, but there IS a small amount of residual color (check out Phil Harrington's comments in the latest issue of Starware if you don't believe me). My point is simply one of logical consistency: it has a larger aperture and a faster focal ratio, and since it is the same kind of ED doublet, it MUST therefore have more residual color error. It might not be much but it's gonna be there.

I think any refractor in existence will have some residual color right? Even the best of the best are not corrected for all visible wavelengths. In a good scope it would be a non-issue in reasonable seeing conditions? To me that is what I'm after (I'm a visual observer exclusively).

I think that you also have to consider the entire optical train in considering aberrations, as well as seeing conditions - I know I see a lot more color blinking in and out when the sky is not steady.

I suspect that the EON120 is an incredibly pleasing scope for most amatuer astronomers. Hope someone invites me to look through theirs
