Equatorials for all future LX/400 ACF's? new
      #2540161 - 07/25/08 07:57 AM

A dealer, Chris Brownell from 20/20(among the defendants in the RCOS/STAR v. Meade lawsuits)has posted over on the Yahoo RCX group that Meade officially announced it would no longer produce fork mounted ACF/LX400's. Meanwhile, production on the Max Mount and its boards continues. It would not be surprising to see an announcement for smaller version of the Max Mount soon.

Actually that message says no more RCX besides the 16 and 20" OTAs!

Actually, the title of his message says Meade officially announced no more fork mounted ACF's LX400's. The 20 and 16" er's are LX400 or ACF's Right? So???

Hi,

I notice on the Oceanside Photo & Telescope website that the only LX400-ACF scopes listed now are the 16" and 20" MAX mounted models.

Under the their OTA link, the only LX400-ACF models are also the 16" and 20" models.

Adding to that, effective August 4th, there are very significant price increases in the LX200-ACF prices.

It'll be interesting in time to learn the reasoning for this change in their offerings.

Phillip

Trying to avoid bankruptcy? That might be a good reason.

While I have no idea why the cheaper LX400s won't be coming back, I can understand why they want to raise prices on most of their scopes. It isn't just the LX200s, the LX90s, DS line, DSIs, all are getting increases to one extent or another.

I think this might be part of their plan to ensure larger gross margins. I'll have to call up OPT just to be sure, but I do believe I have the older price locked in, thankfully.

I just hope I get mine before the LX200s bite the dust too.

Wow. THat is sad news, Onthe other hand I have a collectible RCX and a 10" R tube that's worth a little more. Do you have a link to where the new MSRP's will be?

Greetings Phillip,
Meade is continuing development of the MaxMount electronics and firmware as I have reported on other threads here, but there seems to be no corresponding development of the fork systems. There have been several posts in this category passionately calling for the ACF/ nee RCX optics to be sold as an OTA. The Meade 10", 12" and 14" ACF tubes would be extremely competitive with the RC's if they could be mounted on an equatorial platform. The MaxMount would be overkill for the smaller tubes, but what about something, say...half the capacity of the MaxMount. Would that not account for the effort and attention the "handful" of MaxMount owners are presently receiving? Just speculating.

"It would not be surprising to see an announcement for smaller version of the Max Mount soon."

About 18 months ago I had emailed a supplier with some questions about mounts. I was told that Meade was planning to produce a smaller version of the Maxmount once all the bugs were out of the Max mount. It is supposed to be AP 900 size and called the Mini max.

The MaxMount design, lacking castings, is readily scalable. Meade is unlikely to discard the R&D expenditures that produced a revolutionary optical system. And, didn't Meade promise "exciting" announcements for 2009?

Since there hasn't been another message (in the yahoogroup's daily digest anyway) on this topic - and with a post like that you'd expect some - I posted this morning asking for clarification.

That group is not very active any more, which may be a reason for the surprising lack of response. I've also been told what was reported there:

16 and 20 Max scopes are it for now. Mini Max? Maybe.

Interesting. I've been one of the 'passionate' voices calling for an OTA version of the RCX for a while now! I even suggested the mini-max a while back.

If Meade can stabilize their finances, this has to be a serious option for them to look at.
