Jupiter w/entire Europa transit 08-01-08
      #2553746 - 08/01/08 12:36 AM Attachment (27 downloads)

I'm shooting numerous sequences tonight. This is the best result as of now. I have some from earlier in the evening showing the GRS rotating into night that I'll post later. That is Europa you see on the disc

Well, I hadn't planned on it at all, or even knew it was going to happen, but I managed to capture the entire transit of Europa across Jupiter at 10 - 15 minutes intervals. Seeing was just OK, but the results are decent. I'll most likely have them posted in a bit, but it might be tomorrow. I think I shot around 15 sequences or about 30 gigs. Might be awhile till I get a gif though. In all seriousness, since I'm not too good at making gifs, if someone out there is, I'd pay them for their time.

I think I'm cross-eyed after tonight. But here is a small version of the entire transit. Full version can be found at the link

Awesome captures! I might be able to make them into an avi for you.

Very nice work. I enjoyed the transit in the eyepiece last night.

I so badly wanted to capture at least part of that transit, I got Jupiter into the scope (it was before the transit), laid down for 2 hrs and went outside to find clouds. Ah well, you did a great job capturing it!!

Thanks guys. That was a rather tiring deal. Started a bit after 10PM local and posted the finish product at about 2:40 AM. One of the biggest pains was trying to be consistent in the processing, since seeing was spotty and variable. While shooting one avi, I'd be processing the previous in K3ccd. Luckily my scope tracked good all night. I do believe I might take tonight off (probably not though)

great job, Joel. i agree it can be tiring processing an animation especially with the varying conditions. its worth it when it comes out looking good, though.

Hi Joel,
Very clean and detailed sequence for the altitude(the whole sequence!!!)
On the other hand a big effort...very hard job!!
Excellent job!!!!

Thanks guys. I hope to have an animation soon. Adam is helping me out and I'm seeing what I can come up with. But my skills are rather lacking when it comes to that stuff. I just did a quick run through of the images in order and I'm surprised that the color, contrast and gamma seem to be pretty consistent, so it should be a neat animation. Too bad the detail isn't sharper, but I think that is mainly due to seeing. I know my collimation was good and shooting over a hot roof didn't help.

This is the best I've been able to come up with in regards to a gif. I just can't seem to get the fine alignment down, but then again, I don't know what I'm doing. You can see it drifting a bit through the sequence.

have you tried ppmcentre?
i export the avi as bmp files using vdub, then run them through to center them before heading to registax.

pcfe is a front end for ppm that works without using the command line. heres a link to icemans page that has a download.
link

my polar alignment usually needs adjusting every few minutes so ive found ppm essential to being able to line everything up for gifs without tearing my hair out.

Lun
Registax can help you make a time lapse...it will be an avi tho, but you can import it into PS's imageplus to make a .gif

Load up the images like normal....hit the align...then look for "create integrated avi" tab. Sometimes it works well. I oftyen just hand align tho too.

Thanks Fox! Well, after about 15 hours of work total, this is the best I came up with.
