I couldn't figure out why none of my darks were saving over the last few nights.. So I did some indoors testing today with my DSI and envisage and this is what happens step by step:
1)I select "Take Darks" from the "Image Process" drop down, and hit "start". 2)The pop up prompt comes up reminding me to "Cover the Objective" and I click "ok" and it runs through the exposures based on the time parameters set in the First and Last Exposures boxes. 3)Then it gives me a pop up "No Dark Frames Found" and directs me to "Select [take darks] from the Image Process pull down to create dark frames", and so I click "ok".... 4)Then I get a pop up saying "Dark Frames Complete" and prompts me to uncover the telescope.
Seems like that is backwards.. It also looks like the software is trying to checkmark the Dark Subtract checkbox after running the exposures and that is when the prompt of "No Darks found".. No dark files are ever saved in the specified directory or any other directory on the hard drive.
I couldn't tell you when the last time it worked correctly was, but I haven't gone after DSOs in a while and I haven't tried to use darks in a while either. The system is a Vaio with an Intel chipset, 1 GB RAM, 2.0 GB proc, and XP MCE with Service pack 3.
So far, I've tried changing the darks directory in the software. When you try to manually check mark the "Dark Subtract" box it prompts me to select "Take Darks from the Image Process pull down" and run through the process again. I've tried uninstalling Envisage and Autostar suite completely and reinstalling. I downloaded the new version 7.05 from the website to upgrade from the version 3.0 I had originally on disk. EVERY other feature and function works fine except darks. It will not save them.
Here is what is really peculiar to me - after uninstalling and reinstalling, I go into the "settings" menu to choose my directories and enter my information and it is already there as it was before I uninstalled the first copy. That suggests to me that even though I uninstalled, there are residual files this thing leaves on the system and it picked those old files up again upon reinstall.
Has anyone experiened this? Does anyone know what/where files are left behind after an uninstallation so I can go fish them out? This really sucks now that I finally have my autoguiding working right, now my capture software is screwing up. I'd post this in the software section but last time I posted there, it took too long to get a response..

So when you look in the dark frames directory, there are no dark frames there? If there are images, are the exposure times and dates right?
I guess I'm wondering if it literally isn't saving them, or if it's not finding them to subtract.

Hmmm, did you check the box 'Delete Existing Darks'?

I did try checking "delete existing darks" with no effect. There are zero dark frames in the directory. I did a drive search just to be positive it's not saving them somewhere else, but it isn't.

Sorry, I'm clueless why you're having the problem.
I haven't installed SP3 and I guess there could be a OS specific issue (permissions, administrator rights, etc). However, I'm thinking Windows would give you a warning if it was blocking some action.
On my XP Home machine, I tried several things to make mine not save darks (like changing the dir to read only, changing the file type, changing capitalization, etc.), but it saved them every time. I even changed the name of the darks directory in the Envisage Settings to a non-existent directory. Envisage just created a directory and saved the darks. Note, I'm using Envisage v5.85, at least that's what it says in the "About" box.
Wish I had an answer for you,
al
BTW:
The Envisage "settings" are stored in the system registry under HKEY_Current_User>Software>Meade Inst>Envisage. I suppose these entries could be left behind after an uninstall. You could check and ensure the entries are correct. WARNING: editing the system registry is dangerous and may cause Windows to fail (and not reboot). If you are not comfortable with viewing or editing the registry, don't do it. If everything else is working in Envisage, I can't imagine why there'd be a problem there.

I was just thinking registry entries actually. I went through the install logs to verify all files involved in an install are new and not residual. That pretty nuch narrows it down to the registry key. Nothing else on the system has changed in a long time. Thanks for pointing out which key it is. If this doesn't work ill just reimage my machine. I saved a working image after a fresh format and reload months ago.
Don't worry, regisrty doesn't scare me.. I make my professional living managing enterprise networks and systems. : ) It,s my astrophotography skills that are lacking. lol

Just got back home, did some nosing around and found that one of the registry keys had the wrong path for the darks directory. So I checked the directory it was pointing to and found nothing. I changed the path to the correct one and rebooted. Just tried making darks in Envisage again and now it crashes with a windows exception error in win32. The script data is suggesting something is wrong with the boolean somewhere.. ..and now Envisage is stuck with "Take Darks" in the processing drop down.
I restored the registry prior to my changes, rebooted, and same issue. Something is corrupt, so I'll just reimage..

Just reloaded my system, ran all the driver updates and patches and loaded envisage. Same issue as before. It seems like the application is trying to checkmark the "Dark Subtract" box in the middle of taking darks which then the system prompts that no dark files exist, and the process starts all over again as it never saves the darks. This one is strange.

The normal behavior on my systems is that at the end of taking darks, I think concurrent with the prompt to uncover, the dark "subtract darks box" gets checked and it switches to "deep sky".
Are you just letting Envisage use the default directories \Meade Images and \Mead Images\darks? Not that it should make any difference.
Why not try doing the thing I did while testing. Change the Darks directory in the "Settings" menu to a non-existent directory. Close and restart Envisage, try to take some darks and see if the directory gets created or not. Might tell you if there is file system problem with your existing darks directory.
Weird problem.

Good idea, trying right now. I'll post the results in a second.
I have another theory... but I would need a dark file from someone, doesn't matter the exposure length or anything, but I might be able to trick the software if my guess is right.

No dice.. same issue. And you're right, it's supposed to check the box "Dark Subtract" and default to "Deep Sky". It does default to Deep Sky at that point, but the "Dark Sub" box is not checked. It seems like it is trying to check it and finds no darks, thus the prompt I keep getting. I don't know at this point. I've tried everything I can think of. I'm moving the DSI over to another computer real quick to see what it does..

I should add that I did take darks in the past with this laptop and same DSI when I first purchased it in March, mostly just tinkering and trying to figure out how to use the camera at the time. I haven't really needed darks up until now, as I begin to push longer exposures.
My DSCI takes darks just fine in MaxIM DL, though unrelated apps and hardware, it at least lets me know I'm not a complete idiot.

I've got darks from a DSI Pro, would one of those work for you?

Worth a try. I think I just need a dark file with the proper file header info in it.
I just encountered the same issue on another laptop of mine, a Dell Inspiron. This is odd.

There's also a preference dialog somewhere that lists the directories where darks and images are stored. You might what to check that.

Yeah, that was the first thing looked at. I've been tinkering with it, hoping it was a simple directory issue, it's definitely not.

Thanks Al, I'll give it a shot in a little bit. I'm in the middle of moving my equip outside for some viewing tonight. After I get set up I'll pop the dark frame into envisage and see if it tricks it.
