Catsperch observing chair
      #2557493 - 08/03/08 11:29 AM

Has anyone built one of these from just the plans? I realize they are available in kit form as well. I'm trying to decide if building it from scratch is a worthwhile project. Does anyone know the degree of difficulty?

Depends on your woodworking skills. It's hard to assess the degree of difficulty. You should have a tablesaw and drill press as a minimum. You need a router to round off the corners.

I've built one from the plans The plans are very detailed and if followed, results in a perfect chair.

If you have a wood source, there's no reason you can't simply make it from the plans.

The chair is very nice to use as well,, a good design.

I think the woodworking part will be no problem as I have the necessary tools and have completed projects similar in scope. My concern is more about the hardware and whether or not it will be readily available where I live in Massachusetts.

There is only one piece of hardware. i got mine online. I'll have to look for where I got it.

I think the parts list said where to get it. I'm sure Jim would tell you where to get that one piece.

Thanks John, It was the hinge that I was concerned about, the rest of the hardware is standard stuff. I'm getting excited about completing this project and saving my back during those long observing nights! All assistance is greatly appreciated.

If you go with a lower strut, down further in the supporting frame, you will only need a strap hinge to attach it. The added benefit is the seat locking pin will not have to be removed from the seat, as you adjust up and down the full length of the back.

I built one from similar plans. The plans that I had called for 1" real thickness hardwood. That is overkill. I used 1" (3/4" nominal) thickness lumber. As for the upper hinge, I used a 1" dowel as a pivot pin. No hardwae needed. My biggest challenge was the spreader bar. I also put it down low. I made mine tall enough to sit on and observe at the zenith with my 16" f4.5. I got tons of compliments on it.
