I made an observation of Jupiter on August 3, 2008 using my 9-inch F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain. Much detail was noted over the planet, especially the South Equatorial Belt (SEB) and Great Red Spot (GRS). The seeing conditions were above average (6/10) for a short time before the clouds came in and ended my observing session. I welcome any comments that you may have on my observation.
Date (U.T.): August 3, 2008 Time (U.T.): 05:00 L1 016.2, L2 179.5, L3 177.6 Diameter (Equatorial): 46.4" Instrument: 9-inch (23-cm) F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain Magnification: 273x Seeing (1-10): 6, Antoniadi (I-V): III Transparency (1-6): 5
Notes: South Polar Region (SPR): Appears dark to dusky (3-4) and mottled. South Temperate Zone (STZ): Appears thin and shaded to bright (6-7/10). South Temperate Belt (STB): Appears dark (3/10) and thin. No ovals visible within it. South Tropical Zone STrZ): Appears bright (7/10) with a dark (3/10), oval-shaped albedo feature following the central meridian (CM) and preceding the Great Red Spot (GRS). Great Red Spot (GRS): Appeared dusky (3/10) and salmon-pink with a white central core. South Equatorial Belt (SEB): Appeared dark to dusky (3-4) and containing dark (3/10) dark condensations along it's northern border and bright (7/10) undulating sections (strips) within it. Equatorial Zone (EZ): Appeared shaded to bright (6-7/10) with a thin, dusky (4/10) band across the center of it. North Equatorial Belt (NEB): Appeared dark (3/10) and thin with a dark rod (barge) on the CM along it's northern border. North Tropical Zone (NTrZ): Appeared bright (7/10), but no other detail visible within it. North Polar Region (NPR): Appeared dark to dusky (3-4/10) and mottled.
The best of luck in your own observations of Jupiter.

Excellent observation, Carlos! I especially like the wide angle view showing two of Galileo's satellites.

Thank you all for your very kind compliments on my Jupiter observation. I was happy to be observing Jupiter once again. The king of the planets always presents a challenge. I look forward to your future observations.
Rich- I was unable to view Red Spot Jr. as it was on the following limb and therefore more jovian atmosphere to look through. I hope to see it and the Great Red Spot in detail soon. The best of luck in your own observations.

Wade,
Thank you for the compliment on my latest observation of Jupiter (and satellites). It was fun observing Jupiter once again. Your observation of Jupiter was fantastic. I look forward to your future observations.

Very nice digital rendering. It is very similar to what I saw at about 9UT (2 AM PDT this morning) as the GRS just rotated into view from the planets western edge before I called it a night.
I had made some Photoshop renderings of Jupiter as observed though my 10.1" Dob last summer. Although I do not think I am getting the detailed image that you are through a 9" Maksutov.
I look forward to your furture sketches.
best regards,
Mark

Mark,
Thank you for the compliment on my Jupiter observations. I am looking forward to a good view of the Great Red Spot (GRS) on or near the CM. The best of luck in your own observations.

Carlos,
It's wonderful to see one of your excellent observations and detailed reports. The colors in these digital renderings are really nice. Hope you can post another one soon--I haven't seen nearly enough of Jupiter this year--either through my own telescope or through the eyes of others.
Btw, looking at the drawing, I think that preceding and following are reversed.

Carlos,
Wow, what a sketch! I'm really impressed. That is maximum quality time. Look at all those details you recorded. And an excellent choice of colors as well.

Beautiful rendering with computer software. With the extreme contrast in the NEB and SEB, are you using filters at the eyepiece?
Thanks again for sharing this,
Mark

Mark,
Thank you for the compliment on my Jupiter observation. The observation was made without the use of a filter. I have employed filters on Jupiter in the past. The reddish-brown belts are enhanced using a light blue (Wratten 80 or 82A) or blue (W38A) filter. The Great Red Spot (GRS) may be enhanced using the blue filters above as well as a magenta (W35) filter. I tend to observe without the use of filters but they can prove useful to amy observers.
I look forward to your excellent observations.
Carlos
