Where should I drill the holes in my Newt's tube? new
      #2558814 - 08/04/08 03:04 AM

I'm overhauling my vintage late 1970's homebuilt 6" f/8 Newtonian. I want to squeeze maximum performance out of it. I just had the mirrors recoated, and bought a 13mm Nagler.

Now I want to optimize the positioning of the existing optical elements (where, exactly, to drill the holes for the mirror cell, secondary holder, and focuser?) I want everything to be in optimal geometric relationship.

If you know of any good books that cover this subject, or useful websites, please let me know! Should I get a copy of Berry or Texereau?

I looked around on the web, and found, among other things Newtonian Telescope Design Planner but this doesn't quite answer my questions (or I just don't quite understand it).

Finally, I'm interested in possibly eliminating the metal clips that hold the main mirror in the cell, and simply using glue instead; if you have an opinion on this, I'd like to know!

Thanks

P.S. I'm also interested in opinions on baffling, flocking and masking

The Newtonian Design planner you've found is excellent and it is in part what I used to successfully locate my mirror cell, focuser, and secondary. I also read extensivey about the subject in Berry's and Texereau's books. As far as the mirror cell goes, you are wise to avoid mirror clips. The mirror cell design I used is similar to This
