Ok, same mount as AltAZ-1 but this time with a refractor.
Important change in the mount compared to the reflector version is the lenght of the tripods' legs.
The refractor version need legs much longer.
Due to this long legged tripod an additional connection between its legs is a necessity to make it sturdy.
This AltAz mount is quit easy to build.
It is build completely out of plywood.
Bearings : combination of formica/teflon.
Usage :
1- Small to medium telescopes.
2- Both refractor and reflector.
3- Transportable even in a small car.
Measurements and drawings to build this one can be found in Richard Berry's book : Build your owne telescope.
ISBN : 0-864-18476-1

I built that mount about 15 years ago for a 6" f/8 Astrophysics refractor. Works great.

A few other CN members did to Don, got pictures of yours, link..?
Here's another one build by Ron Ravneberg. Very beautiful one.
And this one made by Dave Grosky is also a beauty. Dave told me to have the weights mounted very low to improve stability.
This one was posted a while ago by Gregg : http://tmspa.com/2002%20photos/b%20P7100086%20telescope%20field.jpg Far left you'll see the green mount also with a refractor.

Chriske, I bought the Berry book, and have been using Chapter 6 as a guide to fab up the mount and tripod. But your photo's add so much more to the process. Do you think it would still be necessary to add those three support sections for the tripod legs as per Berry, instead of just utilizing that single center support beam as per your drawings? Also, I noticed some of the side bearings for the tube look to be made from plastic rather than wood. Anybody know if these types of bearings can be purchased in different sizes? Thanks as always, and still building.

Yes indeed, I noticed to the 'plastic' bearings in RB's book. I would go for a wooden bearing and a strip of formica glued on it, (same as regular 'Dobbearings').
What do you understand by : three support sections for the tripod legs as per Berry Don't understand I'm afraid...sorry...

I was referring to the "three trefoil layers of the hub" listed on pages 145-150 in Chapter 6. They are located directly under the top round piece of the hub of the tripod(where the mount sits on), and hold up each of the tripod legs. It's looks to be a different way of connecting the legs of the tripod to the base of the tripod. If I'm reading the drawings right, your method seems easier, and doesn't require as much construction. But possibly the Berry method is more stable with a large refractor? Maybe somebody can jump in here and help me out. Thanks.Chas

Ok I see... I would not make it as it is described in Berry's book at all. He use these three layers to make the connectionblock (toward the legs) out of it. Just use one layer and make a set of bloks like in my drawing. Works great. In case of a large and heavy telescope you must make these blocks as wide as possible to prevent the topdisk from flexing during observing.
