Nexstar 5 Alignment problems new
      #2559403 - 08/04/08 12:17 PM

Hi group. I have the original Nexstar 5 (Silver OTA) which I gave to my daughter. Last night while aligning the scope using auto align, the scope slewed to Vega. During the process of centering Vega using the up arrow on the HC, I noticed Vega continue to drift in the same direction after I took my finger off that (up/down) arrow direction button and went to the left/right arrow button to center in that direction. Any idea in what might be occuring? It makes it very difficult to atttempt an accurate alignment with this occuring. Do you think it might be the batteries? Or is there something more sinister occuring. Thanks Bob Midiri

Probably gear slack / backlash it's normal, there is sometimes a compensation setting you adjust in the handset. Normaly you take your drives through a traning procedure which I assume calculates the adjustment required.

If it is drifting UP when you release the direction button it would be most likely caused by the your basklash settings...
and to be honest I have no clue if the NS5 has both positive and negative settings for each axis...

If it is drifting Down when you release the button I'd guess is that your altitude adjust nut need to be adjusted...This is assuming the scope is still fixed to the mount and is still very slightly rear end heavy...

Adjusting the nut is a simple process..but I would NOT tighten it ore then 1/8 of a INCH ..not 1/8 of a TURN...then recheck how it works.. this can be easily done in daylight using a shingled roof or a brick wall as your background,...
