I made an observation of Jupiter on August 3, 2008 using my 9-inch F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain. Much detail was noted over the planet, especially the South Equatorial Belt (SEB) and Great Red Spot (GRS). The seeing conditions were above average (6/10) for a short time before the clouds came in and ended my observing session. I welcome any comments that you may have on my observation.
Date (U.T.): August 3, 2008 Time (U.T.): 05:00 L1 016.2, L2 179.5, L3 177.6 Diameter (Equatorial): 46.4" Instrument: 9-inch (23-cm) F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain Magnification: 273x Seeing (1-10): 6, Antoniadi (I-V): III Transparency (1-6): 5
Notes: South Polar Region (SPR): Appears dark to dusky (3-4) and mottled. South Temperate Zone (STZ): Appears thin and shaded to bright (6-7/10). South Temperate Belt (STB): Appears dark (3/10) and thin. No ovals visible within it. South Tropical Zone STrZ): Appears bright (7/10) with a dark (3/10), oval-shaped albedo feature following the central meridian (CM) and preceding the Great Red Spot (GRS). Great Red Spot (GRS): Appeared dusky (3/10) and salmon-pink with a white central core. South Equatorial Belt (SEB): Appeared dark to dusky (3-4) and containing dark (3/10) dark condensations along it's northern border and bright (7/10) undulating sections (strips) within it. Equatorial Zone (EZ): Appeared shaded to bright (6-7/10) with a thin, dusky (4/10) band across the center of it. North Equatorial Belt (NEB): Appeared dark (3/10) and thin with a dark rod (barge) on the CM along it's northern border. North Tropical Zone (NTrZ): Appeared bright (7/10), but no other detail visible within it. North Polar Region (NPR): Appeared dark to dusky (3-4/10) and mottled.
The best of luck in your own observation and imaging of Jupiter.
Regards, Carlos

I have added a wide field view of Jupiter and two of the Galilean satellites (Io and Europa, respectively). I hope that you all like it.
The best of luck in your own observations of Jupiter.

I just had a good view of one of the Moons eclipsing Jupi, and another one is just about to make its move. The GRS is on its way rotating, and hould be visible ina half hour pretty good.

Jacob,
Thank you for the compliment on my Jupiter observations (drawings). I am glad that you got a good view of Jupiter yourself. The best of luck in your future observations.

Excellent as always Carlos, I am having problems with Jupiter being only 15 degrees altitude this year, but I have made a few drawings, weather has also been rather variable this year. http://www.spacealberta.com/jupiter/jup2008/jupiter2008.htm

Carlos, sorry it's taken so long responding to your post. The sketch is excellent! It closely matches what I see at the eyepiece, with the exception of a few details you mention and depict that I don't recall observing. Those are: dark oval shaped albedo feature on STrZ. I wondered if this could be another storm/anti-cyclone similar to the GRS. White central core of GRS. It's rare I see visual evidence of the swirling action of the GRS in amateur sketches. You depict slightly more vivid color in the GRS than what I observe. The thin dusky band across the center of the Equatorial Zone. The dark rod (barge) along the northern border of NEB. Again, I wondered if this could be a smaller version of the GRS?
Did you use any filters that would help bring out that additional detail? Is your OTA flocked or baffled to minimize light scatter, or are these issues with a Mak? Did you use a dew shield to cut down on glare?
Thanks, again, for sharing.

Kenneth,
Thank you for the compliment on my Jupiter observation. I was impressed with the amount of detail visible. I have attached an excellent image of Jupiter obtained by imager Joel Warren on August 3, 2008 showing many of the features I noted in my own observation. It shows the dark condensation within the South Tropical Zone (STrZ) and dark rod along the northern border of the North Equatorial Belt (NEB). I stated that the core of the Great Red Spot (GRS) was white but in fact the northern half of the GRS was lighter in color in reviewing my notes. The dusky band across the Equatorial Zone (EZ) was visible only when the seeing steadied (as noted in Joel's image).
I did not use any filters for observation of Jupiter. Filters are useful for observing Jupiter (e.g. Blue (Wratten 38A for the dark belts, Red (W23A or 25) for the GRS, etc.).. My 9-inch F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain is not flocked but does have internal baffles. I sometimes employ a dew shield when the humidity is high (very common where I live).
The best of luck in your own observations of Jupiter.
Carlos
