Portamount vs Voyager
      #2560032 - 08/04/08 05:46 PM

I have been reading this forum for quite awhile and have received alot of great tips from it.I have a Orion Apex 102 mak and I am trying to decide which of these two mounts to purchase. They have both received very good reviews and I was wondering if there are folks out there with similar scopes on these mounts that could offer some advice.I intend to get the Manny bracket mod for the mount I get. Thanks in advance Dan

I went with the Voyager. The reason is that for about the same price the Voyager looks more sturdy and is rated for more weight. I was thinking I might be able to use it for other larger grab-n-go scopes down the road. I think it would handle 6" Maks/Cats easily... maybe even more... I'm pretty sure it could also handle a 120mm short tube. So you see, I may keep the mount longer than the scope I bought it for.

All that said, the portamount looks like a great mount too and it has some pluses of its own.

Another vote for the Voyager here. Works brilliant for my small refractors.

I'm sure someone should also mention that they are currently working on a Voyager HD mount that will have an increased weight capacity. If i remember correctly from the vendor announcements it will have a capacity somewhere in the 30lbs range.
