optical comparator mirrors?
      #2560201 - 08/04/08 06:57 PM

Anyone know how flat optical comparator mirrors are? Good enough for large binoculars? Hi mag for telescopes when redirecting light to the objective? Thanks.

Not very flat. If you do a search of this forum for "comparator" there are a couple of threads that talk about it. One example was a representation from Scherr-Tumico(my guess) that stated a spec of about 8 waves and the other was a test of a J & L unit with about .75 waves of astigmatism. Based on those limited examples binocular use if you are lucky would be about it.

I was cleaning my comparator and was thinking the same thing. Those mirrors are BIG. Too bad they're too thin and not really designed for high optical quality.

If the glass passes a polarizer test for strain then it should work as a blank. That assumes some reasonable thickness of course. Glass type may be plate or pyrex or possbly something else. Mine is plate. I haven't analyzed it for strain yet.
