Hi, cldcld
Welcome to CN!
The 2008 situation is:
"we are still in the analog to digital transition and many DVD Players, Game consoles, camcorders, etc. are still sending out analog signal, so the current digital TV (DTV) will continue support the analog format and can still take analog signal input."
Using a 22" DTV set as an example:
Inputs: Using the 2 available HDMI inputs, you can experience high definition audio and video up to 720p. The 2 component video inputs can be used for video resolution up to 720p. Also available are 1 S-video input, 2 composite video inputs, 1 PC input, and 1 RF input.
HDMI (digital)
compionent video (analog: Y Cb Cr)
S-video (analog: Y and C) <-- some videocam
composite (analog: RS170A/NTSC-M) <-- videocam
PC-input (analog: VGA port: RGBHV)
RF-input (analog: RF modulated NTSC signal)
====================
RE: capture (analog) video signal /images to a computer
Your PC needs a video capture card/video capture device.
There are few threads discussing possible options in this forum.

Hopefully, Jack Huerkamp will post, but in the interim, here's what I know:
1. S-video is the only output; either a color TV or a color monitor - either with S-video input will work. Like many MCHP owners, I have a small monitor for focus and another for wider viewing. Most PCs don't have an S-video input, but there are adaptors.
2. Recording (so far) can be done only on a standard DVD recorder.
3. These recordings can be transferred to a PC, but to be viewable/editable, have to be converted to .avi format.

The Mallincam has 1 s-video output and 1 composite output as well. Both these outputs can be used at the same time. I usually run the composite to a small 7 inch LCD screen to help centre and focus and now I have a video converter I can run the s-video output to it and then it converts the signal to a USB2 connector so I can run it on my laptop as well to record images.

Matt, do you have a link or name and model number for that converter?

Rusty,
Gavin and I use the Imaging source video converters. Check out Gavins fantastic images in the image thread here or in his photo file in the Mallincam yahoo group. What you see posted is what we get up on the laptop screen via the Imaging source video converter. They are one excellent system although not the cheapest but it comes with software called "IC" capture which lets you record and adjust image brightness, contrast, colour as well as lots of other things via handy slider bars at the top of the menue. They come with either firewire or USB2 output models and composite and s-video inputs. I think the USB2 is all you need for the Mallincam. I use the USB2 version and Gavin uses the firewire version. Easy to use and you don't need capture cards, all you do is load the supplied software onto the computer and you are done. When you want to use it you just boot up the laptop, plug the USB2 into it, plug the Mallincam s-video input into the converter box, and open the software up. The image will appear on your screen in real time and the IC capture software menue is at the top ready for you to make the adjustments and record your images. I don't know anything else but will provide the links for them. Gavin if he reads this post may chime in with a few sujestions as he is far more experienced with these than me but from what I have used they are excellent converters with excellent purpose designed software for video systems. They also don't compress the output signal to the PC so I from what I understand is you get a far better picture.

Gavin has been comparing the live picture on his laptop using one of these converters and they are comparable to the images he gets on his 7inch colour CRT Speco.
Regards Matt.

Matt, thanks a lot for the links. Are they available in the US or must they be ordered from Europe? I wonder how it compares to Rock's USB2 converter...

Rusty, I am sure they are available in the US. We got ours from a local electronic and imaging specialist down here in Australia. Just E-mail the Imaging source company and request a list of their dealers in the US. You can also buy direct from them. Not sure if they are better than Rocks USB2 as I bought one on the recommendation of a friend. Very easy to use and the software and capture is the same as they use in their excellent astronomy web. cams so they have been designed for astronomers in mind. Have a look at Gavin Bray's images as they are unprocessed so this will give you an idea.

These converters are made by the same people who make the USB and firewire cameras (http://www.astronomycameras.com/en/products/) that are so popular for planetary imaging.
Also, Shevill Mathers, who frequents the videoastro Yahoo group and has many years of astro-video experience, gave these converters his tick of approval.
Finally, I've compared the image from the converter and displayed on my PC's LCD screen with the same image shown on my Speco CRT monitor. My feeling is the Speco is perhaps just slightly better than the converter. My 20 year old son's opinion is the converter is slightly better. So, I would say the image is comparable to the Speco. I rarely use the Speco these days as I enjoy saving snaps on my PC so I can share them with others and occasionally display them in the house on the TV screen.
I haven't used Rock's converter so I'm afraid I can't make a comparison. I did try an in-PC converter card and an external Canopus converter but didn't like either of them. I certainly can recommend TheImagingSource converter but I suspect others can equally recommend other converters that they use.

Matt, Gavin - thanks very much for the insight! Currently, I use an upscale (and bulky) 120VAC DVD recorder; I'd much prefer to dump the images onto my laptop.
