fwiw I've had this mount for ~20 years now, and it's still in very good shape (mainly because it was used sparingly) - had the dual-axis control early on, and then got a SkySensor 2000 (ROM v2.01) for it about 10 years back. I suppose for nostalgic reasons I'd like to hold on to it and perhaps put it to more use. So here's some questions on my mind:
1) Can anyone confirm that VSP will mount on current GP-D/CG-5 tripod/pier heads? I'm looking at getting a Antares Pedestal for semi-permanent installation (mount stays covered outside, bring in OTA and HC).
2) How much more stability would I gain with a CG-5 over the VSP? Anyone care for a direct comparison? fwiw I'm under no impression that the VSP is a heavy-duty mount; with a C-8 OTA it's just about acceptable (to me) for visual use, let alone AP. With an 80mm OTA it's nice and solid for piggy back and some prime-focus AP imo. Max loading would probably a C5 or C6.
Getting the VSP to accept Vixen style dovetail is another matter I suppose, I'm waiting for Trapezium to get their production back up. I was also contemplating getting a GP-D2 to go with my SS2K (and retire the VSP), but for the price I'd presume the Atlas EQ-G would be a much better bang-for-the-buck.

Losmandy has the stuff for about $75 (APP plus VSP).

John,
Thanks for the input - just to clarify, from this product page:
http://losmandy.com/v-series.html
All I need is VSP mounted onto APP, and that will bolt onto the Super Polaris 160mm saddle? And this will give me a regular Vixen Dove-Tail saddle on my VSP mount?
Thanks much!

That's how I read it. I haven't tried it myself (though I may, if my Super Polaris remains here much longer).

I think you are right about the Losmandy parts. Here is a picture of my setup (purchased 2nd hand).
FYI, the screws on the SP are 1/4-20 and can screw directly into scope rings that have these threads. I can mount my 100ED this way and it's a lot lighter, requiring less counterwieght.

I have the celestron super polaris version and got it about 20 years ago as well. I recently bought a CG-5 mount and all metal and machined parts of the super polaris and the CG-5 are interchangable.
As for stability the CG-5 is like 1,000,000% better for photography though using the hand control took some time to get used to. The skysensor I only used for tracking though it did have dual motors it was just to slow to be of any use for me.
Also for my C8 to mount to the CG-5 mount I just sandwiched the old super polaris dove tail and the removable CG-5 mounting plat and drilled holes out in the correct places (they were pretty close, but needed adjustment) then put in some nice big bolts. No clearance issues and perfectly strong and safe.

Thank you all kindly for the fantastic input! It looks like I would probably convert my VSP over to vixen dovetail mount (using Losmandy parts) and use it as my 'nostalgic' goto mount, and consider the CG-5 (or EQ6 level mount, depending on how much I'd like to haul around) for imaging purpose.
Just one quick vent if I may ... I was a little dispirited trying to get this same advise (and a little more) from astronomics in person, including bringing along the SPC-8 OTA to get a simple answer to the question "I want to put a Vixen-style dovetail on this OTA" (the other being I want to put a Vixen-style dovetail on my WO Zenith Star 80) - what do you have that I can buy now? General answer I got was it's an old OTA, look around the 'net, and put rings on the Z80
