We sent the 12" SCT OTA down the road and have replaced it with a SN10. The 12" is simply too heavy to mount and un-mount when we were wanting to use the refractor for planetary viewing.
Alas...the pier is now about 10 inches too high and has to be cut back. Standing on the top step of the stool, and I can't reach the eyepiece to see Mizar. Being made of 12 inch diameter solid concrete, Marge is wondering if we can get Scott K to make the trip up from Texas to run the hammer drill. If you'll remember, the original pier was 15 inches too low for the refractor and SCT so we had to extend it. On again/off again... It turns out a good time to do it as the mount is down for repairs anyway. Photos later....Work before play---got some hats to do for the Horstman's today.

Steve, have you considered using rotating rings... that would bring the EP down considerably much of the time, and would allow you to all the time get better angles...
Just a thought...

Dave....rings of some sort....if not actually rotating, then at least the black ones attached with long screw clamps.
Even with just the additional rings it would not lower the eyepiece for viewing straight up. Thank the Lord I have the ED dome and NOT the POD dome....

If, in the future, you need to extend the pier again, you might consider what I did. I originally built for a height suitable for my NX11. I needed to extend when I got an A-P 155EDF and 1200GTO. 10" aluminum pipe machined to about 15" high makes the pier a convertible.

Hey cool, you got it done without me!
What do you mean you don't like my plan to start a construction business!
I'm glad breaking through the pier went pretty smoothly for you. It really makes a hell of a mess though, doesn't it?

Mess...I've a feeling only you and I know the meaning of the term as it applies to Observatories!
Admittedly it would have been more fun with ya, buudy.

Well, if I can't be a positive example, a negative one will have to suffice!

Yeah, it amazes me that you can take a pressure washer to something and still not have it come totally clean! Be glad you didn't have to deal with slurry. I hate slurry now. Cleaning that out was just horrible.

Yeah, I'm sorry I'm not closer! Oh, and thanks for clarifying the duration of a New York minute. I'd always wondered at the precise value!
