For larger scopes it is, just like the yoke, a non-transportable mount. Well made it is a very sturdy thing. Difference with the Yoke, the horsshoe has no blind spot in the north (or the south for the guys down-under) Usage : 1- Small to very large telescopes. 2- Reflector (mostly Newtontelescopes). 3- Not transportable mount. When you speak of splitring mount(monture en anneau ouvert), french peoples doesn't know what you are speaking of but they all know the horseshoe mount(monture fer à cheval). -------------------- Canon 10x42 IS binoculars.
