This one is absolutely not a first time to build mount. For larger scopes it is, just like the yoke, a non-transportable mount. Well made it is a very sturdy thing. Difference with the Yoke, the horsshoe has no blind spot in the north (or the south for the guys down-under)
Usage : 1- Small to very large telescopes. 2- Reflector (mostly Newtontelescopes). 3- Not transportable mount.
It thinnk more as it beeing a combination of splitring and a Yoke

One of the kind in France : http://astrosurf.com/durey/ In France many people name the splitring as horseshoe mount. When you speak of splitring mount(monture en anneau ouvert), french peoples doesn't know what you are speaking of but they all know the horseshoe mount(monture fer à cheval).
