When I start up the Gemini hand controller, it only gets to "GPS timed out" and then hangs up. I can reset the CMOS and it will allow me to go thru a complete setup, alignment, and slewing and tracking and then to a park mount. If I turn the power of, when I restart it it gets haung up again. I've changed the CMOS battery. Any ideas??

As far as I know...It's the one recommended from Radio Shack... Is there a procedure to test it with a hand held multimeter?

Hi,
Mine hung up/shut down on me; it was because I didnt hook up the encoders properly.
..now I've read the manual, so it works..funny how that is.

Yeah, I know. I've had this one for 4 years, the manual is just about wore out.

I sent my unit back to Losmandy for the same issue last year... they fixed it and sent it back... no charge.

I just bought the Gemini upgrade kit for my G-11 and got the same symptom (GPS timed out 01). The reset did not help. My Gemini is the newer version, "G1L4V1.04" on the eeprom. I discussed with the dealer (Perseu) and after changing few e-mails, I returned the control-box. I have not yet got the new one, so I just can hope that it was the faulty component. This thread shows that those products are not tested beforehand. Before I thought that Losmandy-brand meaned so high quality that it was possible to by their products by mail, without testing them first. Now it seems that I was wrong. The mount itself has worked properly all the time and now I can use it without goto, while I'm waiting the spare part.

Kaizu: Just to be clear...my unit is over 4 years old and this is the first time I've had any trouble with it. I have been on the phone with Losmandy today, Scott was out and I was told they would get back to me after they had opportunity to speak with him. I have had to deal with customer support for other telescopes and have not always walked away a happy camper. Now it seems it the time for me to test the support from Losmandy. I will keep you posted.

I live so far from Hollywood that even couple of questions and answers takes about week and changing some parts takes several weeks. Even if all, Losmandy and the dealer, do their best. Thats why I appreciate the quality that I can trust and know that the devices works as they should. The other choice was that the dealer had the complete mount that I could test and see working. Here are so few enthusiasts that anybody keeps Losmandy-class mounts in stock. So I do not really have that choice.

I suppose I could try that....any clues to where to get a new cord? On the other hand, it works OK EVERY time I remove and replace the CR2032 battery and do a reset so I'm not inclined to think it's the cable. If replacing the battery had no affect I might think that way.

I checked mine by multimeter. There should be connection between same pin numbers, 1>1...15>15, and no connection between different number pins. The cable is plastic isolated and I have a little doubt, how it survives through next winter.

I'm on my third Gemini hand controller cable in 3 years time. The last one I reinforced the cable/connector flex point with electrical tape on each end and take extra care when coiling the cable to store in my foam-lined case. So far it's seems to have helped and this cable is holding up. The symptoms were similar to your description for each failure. A simple wiggle of the cord at each end helped diagnose the problem. I was able to bend the cord and tape it to itself and get it working to get through the night each time. I now keep a new one as a spare as well as a set of motor cables and a power cord. Losmandy has taken good care of me over the years. I hope you get this resolved soon.

"The symptoms were similar to your description for each failure."
The key word you use is similar.
I've had to replace my cable once. The mount at that time just quit working, period. If this were the case I'd get a new cable and try it, but it's not the case. I can get the mount to work fine by doing a CMOS reset by removing the battery and reinstalling it.
Each time I turn the mount off, I get the hang up when I turn it back on.
