The first sketch shows what can be gotten on a large object like the Lagoon (it completely filled the screen and I sketched those limits) using an SV102ED and the MCHC set on 14 sec integration and 40% AGC. The screen had more detail and 10 times the star field than what I sketched, so the study/sketch is not exhaustive, but it gives you a good idea.
The second sketch is the Trifid using the SAME setup, so it is also at a net magnification of 56X. Same camera settings.

Very nice Roland, you must have some pretty good dark skies.

WOW Roland! As always, VERY nice sketches! I LOVE your description you have written, The Lagoon and the Trifid: Lessons in contrast. Outstanding! I also like the bright red color you used on the Lagoon.

Thanks for the comments. I believe these views are readily achievable with a 4 inch decent refractor and the hyper color on modest settings/14 second integration. The sky was clear and the Milky Way did show as a faint cloud across the sky, but it was definitely not an exceptional night. The output used the S-video output to the Sanyo screen. Color was set on 50%, brightness set to give a background that was not black but a little greyish, contrast set high. So the view (in my mind and experience) was good but not exceptional. The object is at nearly it's highest postion for our lattitude.
As for the text and lesson, have to give credit to God for that one.
Chris, below about 20 degrees above horizon, this object will lose a lot unless the night is really good. However, you should have comparable precision and color for the Dumbell on a decent night.
Jon...as for the "reds", the HC camera shines with reds. I actually had trouble matching a red that was bright enough to represent my screen view.
Now, in contrast, a larger aperture will see less of the outlying area but give much better color in the central region. The M8 brightest area on my 12.5 in Dob shows more bright pinks, a little more yellow, a few white areas, and the reds are just as bright in places.

Scott, judging from the results I get with the SV80ED, your little 90 should do even better. To me, the camera is worth the purchase...even if an observor only has one fast small refractor. See my post summary near the end of the thread where I am asking for short integration shots. Essentially, using my 12.5 inch Dob with a 22 Pan as the measuring stick, my little 80 with the MC Hyper Color camera was delivering a better image...and in color. Roland

Scott, I have an SV90T which works very well with the Mallincam on the brighter, larger objects. Though for small and faint objects it's hard to beat aperture. I think having a small refractor and a larger scope is an ideal combination for visual and the Mallincam.

You are right, Gavin. That is why I have recommended to more than one observer to use a piggy-back setup if they can and they have the best of both worlds and lots of choices. Switching cameras in this type of rig is easy and fast; you can choose your views (wide/narrow).

Thanks for the information Gavin and Roland. This looks really exciting. I've got a couple of kids in college this fall so I'm struggling with tuition payments. Maybe they would understand me taking one semester off helping them with their payments? Scott

I understand. Sarcasm aside, I got a used Dob that will be with me for years; one can find a 80mm refractor with CA pretty cheap; the used cameras are showing up while those with more money head for the new ones. The setup does not have to cost an arm and a leg. I made my piggyback arrangement. So, bills and commitments aside, one can conceivable save for this kind of arrangement over time. As the thread on unguided mounts suggests, one can even have one small refractor and a used camera...and still see more than what I can see with a 12.5 inch Dob with an eyepiece. All depends on choices and objectives and long run planning.
Clear skies.

Great suggestions Roland. I was kidding about tuition! I started out in astrophotography by using a 1968 Minolta 35mm camera mounted piggyback on my scope mount. I got really fired up when I picked up the photos the next day only to see the reddish colored North American nebula showing up in pictures. That really got me thinking about how much a person can't see visually that is out there. Thanks for all the great ideas and keep up the great sketches! Scott

Thanks Scott. Talk about minimalist and the nebula...I was really surprised at how much of the Central area of our Galaxy showed up with just a little camera lens attached to the MallinCAM. Then when I did the Crescent...I must have checked the 12.5 Dob with a Panoptic 10 times but could not see the Crescent. Of course, with the camera, Voila!!
It just does not get much better. I remain tickled at the possibilities.
