My Messier List new
      #24834 - 12/02/03 12:25 AM

I'm off to a good start on the Messier objects. I really appreciate all the help and good advice I have found on this website. As of 12-01-03 I have observed 15 Messier objects. M1 was a real tough one and kinda a prize to finally get. A couple of favorites are M81 and M82. They were awesome in a 25mm EP where both were in the field of view. Also M78 was impressive. Are there 2 stars in the center? I couldn't really split them with my small scope but it appeared to be 2 or more stars near the center. Anyone have any clues? Also, M81 is by far the most impressive galaxy I have viewed. I felt I could almost make out some spirals if I had looked long enough.

My goodness, for the life of me I cannot find M81 and M82 for some reason. Now your report and description makes me want to see them even more! Any tips on locating these two?

Rick, Did you check out M51 yet? It's great too.

No Echo, I haven't gotten M51 yet but I look forward to it. How does it compare to M81? I found it to be much more impressive than Andromeda. Looks like the weather is gonna cloudy for a few days. Possible snow showers Friday night just in time for my new filter.

Rick,
I like M81 for it's texture. M51 is cool as the galaxies are interacting. I hope you get a chance to use the filter. Send me the snow showers.

Rick,
We have the 25 degree temps already. I just want some snow. I guess I'll have to head up the mountian one day next week and get some skiing in.

25 degree temps in sunny Southern Cal? Well I hope the weather clears up for both of us. Hey Buster, the quickest way to find M81 and M82 is the GOTO. That's what I did. Now alot of people will put down the GOTO system but because of it I found M1 and can now find M1 without it. Plus several other faint and obscure objects. GOTO is the way to go, right Queen of GoTo?

You got it Rick. I will spend hours indoors studying and learning the sky. I will NOT spend hours outside freezing my behind off trying to find something so faint my scope can barely resolve it. You know, if you really could freeze your behind off I bet more women would go out and look through their husband's scopes at night in the winter. It sure beats time on the treadmill!

You are right Echo. Unfortunatly, I will spend hours, well, maybe just 1 or 2, freezing trying to find a fuzzy patch. However, it's my toes and not my behind that gets cold. Anyway, speaking of wifes. I pointed my scope at Andromeda and convinced my wife to come out and take a look. Her reply " That's it. It's a smudge. You stand out here in the cold to see that." Some people just don't understand the addiction.
