Antares 2x APO Barlow Any Good?
      #2564245 - 08/06/08 03:31 PM

I know the 2" 1.6x is highly regarded. Anyone with experience using the 1.25" 2x APOCHROMATIC barlow? (Model UB2SD)? NOT the 1.25 Achromat (UB2S).

How does it stack up against the TV Powermate? I'm in the market, but for what I'm planning, 2.5x might be a little too much... and I don't have a 2" focuser, so the 1.6" is out...

Thanks in advance -

On a side note: Does anyone know if it has a compression ring or is it just the thumb screw? I don't want marks on my barrels

It is essentially the same Barlow as the Celestron Ultima and the Orion Shorty Plus. It would not be as good as a Powermate by any measure. I currently own the Orion Shorty Plus and the 2.5X Powermate, and I formerly owned an Ultima Barlow (which I sold not long after acquiring the Powermate). The Powermate easily outclasses these 3 element models for contrast and for sharpness across the FOV. It isn't even close.

Powermate it is then! Thanks Lawrence. Your input is always valued in here! I've gone through 2 "budget" barlows over the years that never cut it to my eye. I didn't want a repeat.
