My next project will be a full zip bag to carry the tripod. Most of what I have to figure out will be what shape and material to build a saddle from. I'd like to be able to open the bag, lay the tripod in, zip it shut and haul it off. This in and out of the box stuff is coming to a screaching halt for me.

I had the same issue for the last year. I was actually using an old sleeping bag to protect my Giant Field Tripod. I was at my local astro shop a coupl eof months ago and saw an Orion padded dob OTA bag w/handle straps and my wheels started turning.
I ended up purchasing the XT8 dob OTA case and the giant field tripod fits perfectly! Well, there is a little head room (about 8 inches) but the tripod is heavy enough that it doesn't slide around.
Now my tripod has its own padded home. Hmm, maybe I should get one for me... I've always been told I could use a padded room.

Spoonsize,
I don't chime in often but I was thinking about the same issue when I realized that my old military dufflebag would do the trick. The top can be locked and there's also a reinforced carrying strap.

I wish I still had my duffel bag. It got stolen a year after I got out of the U.S. Air Force.
I currently store my tripod in a custom made box I made from quarter inch plywood. it also carries my accessories. I built a second box to hold my OTA/Fork/Base assembly that uses the original packing foam.
