Barlow a Nagler? new
      #2560867 - 08/05/08 12:33 AM

What's the conventional wisdom on Barlowing a Nagler? I'm looking at the 13T6, because it would give me a nice native mag at 92x, and a nice higher power mag Barlowed at 184x. If I were just getting one for the native magnification, I would probably go with the 11T6, since that's about the power I tend to enjoy a lot of objects at. When considering a Nagler, do most people get them for primarily their native magnifications? If you Barlow one, is that kind of like putting a junky set of tires on a premium automobile?

I've barlowed several Type 6 Naglers with the Tele Vue 2.5x Powermate and with a Tele Vue 2.0x Barlow and never noticed any degradation in performance. Using the Type 6 Naglers (and also the 16mm T5) is a very cost-effective way to get more milage out of your eyepiece investment.

Naglers Barlow exceptionally well!

My most used eyepiece is the 20T5 with or without the 2X Powermate.

A Barlow, (or Powermate, telextender, etc.), allows more bang for the buck out of my wonderful, if expensive Nagler. I had been considering a 1.6X Barlow too, but the 2" 1.6x, 2.5x, 3.2x Telecentric Wheel: $349 For 2"EP's looks exceptionally interesting.

My Nagler 16 T5 is so good, native and balowed with a TV barlow, that I don`t have the urge of upgrading to Ethos 13 and 8.

Such is my opinion.

Yes, for good reason, but I still like the the idea of 2.5X and 3.2X in addition to 1.6X - plus, the Telecentric is a 4 element design as opposed to a simple 2 element achromat.

I've barlowed the 5,7,9 and 13mmT6's and the 16mmT5 using a Celestron Ultima 2x barlow. No complaints at all other than I would like to try a Televue 2x barlow to see if or how much better it might be over my Celestron Ultima barlow.
They barlow quite nicely.

I agree! The 16 mm T5 and the several T6's that I once owned all Barlowed excellently.

As long as you use a good barlow. I use an Orion Ultrascopic 2x and it works well for me with my 13 and 9 T6s. I'm thinking of adding a TV 3x or 2.5 powermate to have even more options. It is not out of the question to double barlow if you have two!

To be short : You sure can barlow a T6, but the eyeposition gets a bit more difficult, but it can be done without much difficulty.
This said barlowing my Pentax 10XW goes alot better as if there were no barlow at all...
