Planetary afocal suggestions please new
      #2561335 - 08/05/08 09:24 AM Attachment (21 downloads)

Attached is my best image of Jupiter so far.

It was taken with a cheap digital camera in video mode. The camera was rigidly attached to a high power eyepiece on a stationary 4” achromatic refractor. About 250 images were stacked and wavelet sharpened in Registax to produce the final image.

Question: Is this the best I can expect with this equipment, or are there suggestions for improvement?

Technical details:

Camera: fully zoomed to 112.5mm equivalent, 640x480 15fps, no exposure compensation controls in video mode
Telescope: Celestron C4-R 1000mm focal length
Mount: CG-4 undriven
Eyepiece: 9mm Plossl and 2x Barlow (for 222x)

Welcome to CN!

Yes you can do better but it will never rival the webcam shots Have a look at the Canon Powershot group. Here you can see what is possible

With this kind of imaging, more aperture is always better.

Welcome to CN!
Great picture!

If you can state your camera model, a calculation can be explained.

Clear Skies!

P.S. for P&S digicam, afocal is the only option.

Calculation is here:

Actual zoomed focal length of the camera is 18.6mm, with a 6MP 1/2.5 in CCD (roughly 6mm diagonal).

Chris,

9mm with 2x barlow gives about fl=4.5mm.

So the afocal system gain is 18.6/4.5 = 4x
(Prime focus imaging for a lensless webcam is 1x).

OTA fl=1000mm
with 4x magnification, the new fl is about 4000mm.

Type-1/2.5" CCD has an image area of 5.75mm * 4.3mm, while a
type-1/4" webcam has 3.69mm * 2.77mm.

P.S. P&S digicam in movie mode tends to compress images more.

Clear Skies!
