C8 and polar finders
      #2566028 - 08/07/08 11:36 AM

I need some advice on polar finders.

My old C8 is on a new ASGT, and I'm struggling with learning the tracking, etc. In all my 40 years of using telescopes, I never did anything but visual. Now I want to be able to track for photography and high magnification visual.

Do I need a polar finder for this? Are they worthwhile? How easy to use? Get the Celestron, or is there something better available?

Thanks and clear skies to all!

Richard

No. Forget the CG5 Polar Finder. The Polar alignment routine in the HC works better. It is easy:

1. Center Polaris in the hollow RA axis of the mount.

2. Do a go-to alignment. For best results, add three or four calibration stars.

3. Start the polar alignment routine. The scope will now move to where it things Polaris should be given an accurate polar alignment. Use the altitude/azimuth adjusters on the mount to center Polaris in the finder and in the main scope.

4. Redo your go-to alignment (you moved the mount).

I agree, don't bother with the polar finder. You might also want to look into drift alignment techniques.

You're probably right, Mark. I'm still climbing the learning curve of just getting set up so I can track Saturn or the Moon or Jupiter. Is there a particularly good site or document on the subject?
