Am considering buying the Televue 8mm - 24mm Zoom Eyepiece to use with my 3 1/2 standard Questar. Would this eyepiece be compatible with the Q's focal length and optical system? What are the pros and cons?
Thanks, LarryV

Hi Larry. It should work fine with the Questar's main optics.... but might not produce focused images with the Q in "finderscope mode".

larry, I have a Televue 3-6 Nagler Zoom that works fine with the Questar 3.5 when seeing permits. It does get a little dim at the higer powers but It is a very Sharp eyepiece. The only drawback is I have to observe with out glasses, but this not a problem with the small eye relief

Thanks to Clive and Satman. I still use my original Erfle and Koenigs that came with my Q, and I am still quite happy with them, especially with the wide FOV of the Erfle. But who knows? A Zoom still looks very attractive!
Happy Viewing, Larry

Larry,
It is a very well made EP but it is not made by TeleVue. It is made in the Far East and up to the standards they set and then they sell it. I have also heard that it does not focus in the finder mode of the Questar but is great for viewing.

Larry, All TeleVue eyepieces are made in the far east.In Japen and Tiwan. The only USA made eyepieces are the Brandons. On my Q3.5 i have found not many eyepieces will focus in the finder.the Brandons (of course)and the TeleVue Possels are some. But other then not working in the finder all eyepieces will work.I use my Pentax XW 7mm and it works fine.

I have an old list of EPs that work in a Q.
These come to focus in the finder: Brandon 32,24,16,12,8 Panoptic 15,19 Televue P 32,26,25,20,21,17,10.4 TeleVue Wide 19 Nagler 4.8 Edmund 1 1/8" Celestron 17 Silver Top
These come to focus in finder if "pulled out some" Televue 40 Celestron 40 K University Konig 12 Celestron 20 E Brandon 7/8" Vernonscope 3/4" Cave 25 O University 40 K
These do not come to focus in the finder but work well in the Scope Panoptic 22 Nagler 9,13 Pentax 7 Celestron 35 Ulitma Meade SW 24.5,18 Lanthum 10,5 (not the new wides) Meade W 20 Clave 20,10,6 University 24 Koenig University 20 E Cave 16 O,10 O RKE 28,21,15 Meade 12.4 E Televue Radians 14, 18 (others?)

I need to add a note to the Post on the Televue 8mm-24mm and the production of said item. It is my understanding that Televue did not design this item, they purchased it and have the company brand it TeleVue. If you look at it the TeleVue markings they are not the same as on TeleVue designed item. This EP meets their standards but is not their design. The other TVs are designed by them and then produce in the Far East by companys of their choice. It is a fine EP but as in all Zooms there are limits that are not necessary in single FL EPs.

Thanks also to Billydee and Fred for answering my post re: the Televue Zoom EP. The list of EP's that are compatible with the Q is very informative, as is the info about the manufacturer of this EP. Now if I cuold borrow $240.00 from someone (plus shipping!!)------? Clear skies, Larry

Larry,
Hope you get one. Don't forget that the sponser of CN, Astronomics will give you a 5% to 10% discount on any purchase (I think it is $12 off on this item) and all you have to do is give them your CN registered name. They are a very nice company. I've even gotten some discounts on Questar items.

Hi Larry,
Convenient? Perhaps. But optically and in the viewing experience not up to the Brandons. Or other TeleVues. In my Q7, I enjoy the Brandons by far the best, esp. in the 24 - 12 mm range. None of my TV's or Zeiss ortho's get time in the Q7! And please help yourself with oculars that focus with the finder of your Q. It is so convenient.
Clear skies, Erik

Eric, Thanks for your input on my question of the Televue Zoom EP. I would have responded sooner but I just had two cataracts removed and have been a little busy lately. Yes, the inability to focus in finder mode is a big problem. I have some more thinking to do before I decide. BTW, the cataract surgery has resulted in a tremendous increase in my viewing ability, especially in contrast and sharpness of focus. Now I am seeing again what my Q can really do!

Hi Larry,
Good to have you back. Wonderful your eyes do so well now. Two nights ago I was cruising the heavens with my Q7 and really enjoyed it. The 24mm Brandon gave me most of Lyra and thus an easy way to M57: beautiful! I also had my 70 mm fluorite set up, another wonderful scope. I find that with the Questar 7 - Brandon combination, I spend most of my time observing instead of fiddling with eyepieces to find out wich I like best. I really like the match of the 24 Brandon without and with barlow. Beyond that I use the 12 mm Brandon. That is just two eyepieces with the 24mm doing the majority of the work! In my scope that means exit pupils of 1.5 mm, 1 mm, 0.75 mm and 0.5 mm. I find these a perfect match for my Q7's brightness and resolution and the objects I view with it.
Clear skies,
Erik

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the description of your Brandon EP's and the Q7. I agree, knowing Questar's "quest" for perfection (pun intended!), it would be hard to beat a Questar scope with their Brandon EP's. I am still using the 13mm Erfle (80X-160X), and 26mm Koenig (40X-80X), that came with my 3-1/2" Q when I purchased it back in 1971. They give excellent views, especially the Erfle with it's wide FOV. I am considering the Brandon 8mm and 32mm to compliment my original two EP's focal lengths, and am re-thinking getting the Teleview 8mm-24mm zoom, as it's inability to come to finder focus would be a major drawback for me. Your advice, and that of the "Eyepiece Experts" of CN will be welcome.
Clear skies to all, LarryV
