How good is "good enough" for you? Fast scopes require better (higher $) eyepieces to perform as well as less expensive eyepieces in slow scopes, especially f/10+.

I'll keep my 5-8 SW, the 8 Ethos can wait. My only Hyperion comparisons are the 5 & 8 Hyperions with the 8 Ethos, original 5(4.9)-8 Speers-WALER, and the 12T4 w/2X Powermate. The Ethos is the champ, (no surprise), closely followed by the 12T4 with/without 2X Powermate and 5-8 SW, (in that order), with the Hyperions lagging well behind in contrast and edge of field performance, but still no slouch, looking very nice. The testing was done in a 20" f/5 Obsession with NO Paracorr at the Nebraska Star Party on the Ring Nebula at magnifiations ranging from 212X to 518X. The Ethos had the central star winking at me with 318X, the 5-8 SW needed 374X to wink but was almost constant at 518X, the 12T4 required the 2X Barlow (the only choice at hand- a 1.6X might have worked) to get 423X for the wink, and with the Hyperions the central star never winked - not even at 508X. YMMV

Since I currently use a Burgess 32mm with a Paracorr with edge performance superior to a 31T5 without a Paracorr as a 2-2.3° "finder" eyepiece, and spend most of my time with the 1.3-1.5° 20T5 in the scope and the 2X Powermate handy, I'm not in a hurry to spend more. However, I have been admiring the 31 Axiom LX for $400 - the weight is not a issue with my home-brew Dob.

Hey folks,

I took a shot at the Hyperion Aspheric because of the the specific claim for an especially flat field. I never used my 31m Terminagler because it was so big and heavy and expensive. And, all in all, the space walk effect turns (for me) into an amusement park effect when panning fields of the milky way.

I wanted to pan without much distortion even if it meant other tradeoffs.

OK, so what is the verdict? I enjoy and use my Hyperion 36 more than the big Nagler 31.

Heresy?

No, just a different set of tradeoffs.

I think the Aspheric is an honorable and interesting EP.

BTW, I note I can see more color (e.g. double cluster) with my Brandon 32 than with either the Terminagler or the Hyperion. So there's another tradeoff for you.

Like a previous post mentions - we do have some great choices nowadays!

I lived very happily for a long time with Plossls and Erfles. I did several Messier Marathons with them. Eventually I started picking up Naglers. Also, over the years I've fixed up and given away a few telescopes to family and friends. Whenever I have I usually provide 2-3 eyepieces and a barlow so that's where my Plossls and Erfles went.

After many years I now have a case full of Naglers with a couple of Radians, a Pan and an Ethos. These I will keep.

I think it's important to remember that you don't have to think of a telescope and an eyepiece as being "married" together. Telescopes have come and gone for me but the premium eyepieces are still around. The low to mid range ones found nice homes.
