I posted this in the NexStar thread but it seems that that thread is for folks with the single arm fork so I am posting it here too where the GEM folks hang out.--
My recently purchased CG-5, which I got used but was nearly new, has developed the mindless dec slew whether I attempt to go-to or even push the dec button. The RA motor responds correctly to the hand control commands but either of the dec. buttons initiates a full speed slew which only stops when power is turned on. It understands the "Up" or "Down" command but nothing else. I have opened the dec housing several times checking for tight connections but no amount of poking or fiddling does any good. So does this mean that my basket case needs to go back to Celestron? Do they charge a lot for the repairs? Are there better alternatives? What do I have to do to get service? I hope someone can give me some solid advice. Thanks
Glenn

Glenn, I have that mount. Sometimes the Factory Reset command fixes the weirdness. It's worth a shot!

What vintage CG5 do you have? Some of the older ones had this wild slew problem. The best fix might be to upgrade to the latest hand controller and firmware. If you have the latest hand controller (the one that has upgradeable firmware capability) you can try upgrading the firmware from the NexStar Resource page. They can also tell you how to check to see which hand controller you have.

Thanks for the advice. The guy I bought it from showed me his invoice from OPT dated August '07 so I know it is recent production. I have been to the NexStar Resource site and followed the instructions for updating the hand control and motor firmware. I also took the puppy apart, regreased with super lube and put it back together loosing only one of the two screws that hold the dec. housing together. It worked beautifully for me the week prior to going bonkers. Got polaris in the RA axis, did two star auto align followed by 3 calibration stars and the Goto's were dead on. The next week, after I set it up it went nuts. I can fiddle some more and I think I will try the factory reset to see it that restores some sanity to it. I will post how that works for me. In the meantime I will continue to use my Brandon on the Polaris mount. Cheers. Brandon on Polaris, hopibng the clouds go away!

Aren't wild slews usually an indication of power supply issues? Is that a D cell battery pack dangling from the tray? If so, you might need a longer lasting power supply.

yes you need a power supply capable of putting out at least 2 amps I think. A jump starter will do the trick and keep you going all night..or a reasonable size gel battery (say 17 AH)

Sorry for the confusion. That is my back-up mount, a vixen Polaris mount and yes, the orion eq3 drive uses 4 D cells. For the CG-5 I have a celestron power tank, an 18 amp/hr jump starters and a 6 amp 12v. power supply so I have eliminated low voltage in this situation. I am getting pretty good results with the Polaris mount but I miss the GoTo feature as well as the $500+ I spent for the insane mount.
