Hello
My ETX 90 Ec that I bought back in 2000 has a broken gear in the RA/AZ drive. It happened while I was training the drives this afternoon. I'm thinking about replacing it with either of these scopes.
This would be my grab and go scope and possibly use it for some astrophotography. I like the 5se because it is a lower F ratio which would be beter for AP. I like the ETX because I am familiar with this line (just concerned about Meade's customer service and quality issues).

The first thing I thought of when I saw your post was f/10 versus f/15. They're both good scopes, so it gets down to the fine points. As for imaging; both are primarily visual telescopes that should also perform fairly well for lunar and basic planetary imaging. Deep sky imaging will be a challenge.

Both are really good, but I'd have to go with the 5SE. Better mount, wider FoV, more accessories. Doug

Are you sure that gear is really broken?

I'm sure the gear is broken. I took it apart to find out what was happening. Sure enough there was a broken gear.
I decided to hold off on getting another scope and got a CG5-GT mount for my 8" scope. The dealer that I bought the Autostar from 2 weeks ago took the AS back and gave me full credit which helped with the purchase of the new mount. I mounted the ETX OTA to the dovetail that came with the mount. All I have to do is remove the large counterweights put on a 2.5# weight and I'm good to go. Now I will have an ETX 90 on a VERY Stable mount.
A little scope like that on a big mount looks funny but works.

My apologies, sir. I had to call it that way. And I remember how much I liked my ETX90. Forgive me. Doug

I would have to choose The Celestron NexStar 5SE also.
The major reason for this choice would be the fact that you can remove the 5inch SCT and mount another scope in its place(Like an 80mm WideField Refractor for Imaging)While the ETX-125 does not allow for changing optical tubes.
I have the same mount that comes with the 5SE on my 4SE.It Is A Very Sturdy Mount, and is extremely light weight for the load it can carry.
So the 5SE is a scope I can honestly recommend.
